Brexit deal agreed on as Johnson heads to EU summit

British prime minister Boris Johnson European commission president Jean Claude Juncker tweeted almost simultaneously this morning that agreement had been reached between the UK and EU on a new withdrawl deal.

The Irish backstop is out,the backstop was an insurance policy designed to avoid a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The deal still needs a vote from the EU and British house of commons.

I think there is the tiniest, tiniest chance it may get through the House of Commons.

... I'm not holding my breath, though.

I seriously hope the deal goes through , I'm so tired about hearing about brexit. So much negativity surrounding the topic. In my opinion we should be focusing on more important things now like the NHS and other issues in the country.

What is this going to mean for Ireland and Northern Ireland with the backstop out of the deal.

The backstop is now the front stop, or full stop. It is now baked into the deal permanently but on NI only instead of the UK as a whole.

This is essentially the Feb 2018 deal that the EU first offered to us and the Tories rejected it saying it was unacceptable and they could never vote for it. There are a few changes to the political declaration (though that is non binding anyway and gets negotiated in the transition period) and the EU customs union backstop on NI can now be called time limited, although the truth is that it is permanent as Stormont would not vote to drop it.

There is now effectively a border down thr Irish Sea, hence why the DUP wont back the deal.

Majority of the ERG will go back on their word and vote for it. DUP wont support it and so 4 or 5 ERG wont. The kicked out Tories will back it. A few independents will back it. It's down to how many Labour back it to just get this part of Brexit done. Look out for those stepping down at the next General Election who may back it. Its going to be mighty close!

Labour whipping for a 2nd referendum amendment to be attached will be interesting. I feel that may fall just short, but it's the kind of thing that could throw up a surprise result.

Whispers the Govt will cancel today's vote if the Letwin Amendment passes today. Even some rumours the Govt will send everyone home just if the Letwin Amendment is tabled. Would be quite incredible if true.

FYI - Letwin Amendment changes today from a meaningful vote to effectively an indicative vote. Johnson is considered very untrustworthy by many and has set out the last few days of negotiations so that MP's only had 48 hours to look at his deal but also he is refusing to reveal the full financial impact assessment of it and all the proposed legal wording. The letwin amendment means we have an indicative vote today, he then reveals all, then they vote again at the end of Oct to confirm if they want to vote for it or not. If he pulls it today then it would suggest he knows there are things hidden in the deal he doesn't want MP's knowing about before they vote. I wonder why........

Letwin Amendment passes. Big vote called off today. That may now be Tuesday after legislation is seen.

Who writes the letter to the EU asking for an extension now.....

There's one type of Brexit, you leave the EU and all of its institutions. That's what people voted for. Johnson's deal doesn't do it. And no one is talking about the most important issue.

Johnson requests and A50 extension from the EU.

I heard when Johnson sent the letter of extention to the EU he didn't sign it and requested it be rejected.

Of course he did. He's like Inspector Clouseau meets The Joker.
