That inmate died nearly two years ago. The OP left out this crucial detail.

Quote:
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The family of a Michigan man who died of a drug overdose at a state prison has filed a lawsuit alleging his death was connected to a drug smuggling ring in the prison.

Seth Zakora, 21, died from a drug overdose Jan. 22, 2017, in the Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater, Michigan.

Another inmate had asked corrections officers to check on Zakora the night before his death because there appeared to be something wrong with him, according to the lawsuit. The officers allegedly never checked on Zakora.

That morning, Zakora was found dead in his bunk, covered by his bed sheets. His was the third overdose in three days in his prison unit, and the first fatal one.

At the time of his death, drugs were "in abundance and being smuggled" into the prison, allegedly orchestrated by a female corrections officer and a prisoner with whom she had a romantic relationship with, according to the lawsuit. Another inmate had informed inspectors of the drug smuggling ring on more than one occasion, according to the lawsuit, and gave details of how the drugs were coming in and who provided them.

I am a bit puzzled on how a romantic relationship turns into a drug smuggling ring.

Once a guard has sex with an inmate they have crossed a line and have gone to far and if it becomes known there job will be terminated.

This information the inmate has on the guard is power that can be used to control the guard into giving the inmate what they want.

example....."If you don't smuggle drugs into the prison for me,I will tell administration about our affair" and the guard has to choose between avoiding jail for sure but loosing there job for sure, and risking going to jail if they get caught with drugs,to save there job.

This is how guards get punked out by crafty inmates,it happens quite often.

So it was just one guard? I misunderstood and thought it was several guards. That is what had me puzzled.

If I were having an affair with a prisoner and he threatened to tell, I just deny it. If they weren't caught in the act, who could prove it?

Are you serious?

I am puzzled as to why you find that "puzzling".

Its all too easy to imagine all kinds of ways that an illicit love affair between a guard and a prison inmate could evolve into a drug smuggling ring.

What puzzles me is that I had the impression that prisons are sexually segregated and that they only have guards and inmates of the same gender in most prisons. So how did a heterosexual affair happen between a guard and an inmate?

As I said, I first thought several guards were involved was how I found it puzzling. I get it now that VS pointed out it was only one guard.

There are a lot of guards in prisons who's gender is opposite of the prison gender.

In male prisons female guards often get sucked into drug smuggling and escape attempts.

In female prisons rape of female inmates is common by guards.

The article I read said it was rooted in a relationship between a guard and an inmate, this could mean one guard was involved or it could mean the guard who had the affair got other guards involved in the scheme. But yes it was at least rooted in one guard having an affair with an inmate.

I would be interested in hearing what kind of dirt the one guard having the affair had on the other guards to persuade them to get involved. Makes no sense unless the one guard was a major nymphomaniac and had DNA samples of all the male guards and was threatening to tell their wives about it.
