Coronavirus itself is not the hoax, it is the public society's response to it.

I don’t understand.
How is someone’s refusal to protect me and themselves a hoax?

The freedom and rights argument just sounds to me like people claiming that their own freedoms and their own rights and their own health and their own safety is more important than anyone else’s and if you value the lives of others you’re a chump.

I hear you.
But they are endangering themselves by not masking and distancing.

The flu killed tens millions of people in 2018. How insistent were you that people wear masks then?

I'm all for wearing masks. But the issue is even with 80 million people dying of the flu in just the US alone most people didn't come anywhere remotely close to insisting everyone should wear a mask.

Why not?

Where did you get these numbers from?

The overall burden of influenza for the 2017-2018 season was an estimated 45 million influenza illnesses, 21 million influenza-associated medical visits, 810,000 influenza-related hospitalizations, and 61,000 influenza-associated deaths.

If the flu killed 80 million out of 328 million Americans no matter what the government did the U.S. would be in massive anarchy and in total dysfunction. Food and water would be scarce and you would not be posting because the power grid and the internet would have collapsed.

I sincerely apologise. My brain went out to lunch when I was appealing to memory. The number is 80 thousand, not 80 million. From:

"Over 80,000 Americans Died of Flu Last Winter, Highest Toll in Years"

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/01/heal ... ccine.html

That's 80 thousand, not million. A difference by a factor 1000.

I elaborated on that above.

I know there are only 7.8 million people on the Earth, which is 93 billion miles away from the sun :jester:

Ok.
For some, these numbers are not abstract at all. 80 million is almost 1/4 of US population. Something that killed that many in one year would be a disaster worse than WWII no matter what the government's response would be.

There are actually almost 8 BILLION people on Earth.

I'm curious: does anybody here know the term "milliard," meaning "1,000 million"?

In the old days, in the UK, a "milliard" was the American "billion," and the "billion" was the American "trillion."

Polish uses that system. French, I think, too.

The problem is how commas and dots are used to write numbers in English speaking countries, for example ten million is written as 10,000,000.00 rather than 10.000.000,00.

Here, it would be 10 000 000,00.

We say "milliard" in Hebrew for billion.
