Do you find the flashing/moving avatars annoying

Yes, flashing, animated avatars are truly annoying for me. You don't need to cover them with your hand, you know -- you can just freeze your browser (little red x next to refresh icon). This is what I do. Works great.

Yes but that requires getting the mouse there. I need to keep it covered until I can take care of it (In my case that means blocking the image so I will never see it again).

Some annoy me, but I just hit the escape button and they stop moving.

The ad banners, on the other hand, don't seem to respond to the escape button. I'll refresh the page if necessary; they're much more distracting to me than avatars for whatever reason.

It really depends.
Avatars with moving parts don't bother me, but anything flashing like crazy can get very distracting and thus I have animation disabled in my IE and don't seem to see any movements.
The adverts that move drive me MAD. :P
