I usually dont like using the word redneck, but "lower working class, traditional, consevative southern white demographic" is a mouthful. Anyway, My question is why does this group refuses to eat healthy.
I mean like my brother...he got some milk out of my fridge and was going to pour him some until I told him that it is organic. He promptly stops in in tracks and gets water instead. WTF!!
Anyway, then a few of my other "redneck" friends also refuse to eat anything organic and like to cook in crisco instead of olive oil. I told them how truly unhealthy crisco is for heart health, and they said ya but it tastes good. urg!
I started looking around and I noticed "redneck" folks really have a thing against eating anything remotely healthy.
What is up with this???

Any ideas.

Because they're stubborn.

You do know you're describing the vast majority of Westerners, and not just "rednecks", right?
That being mindful of health when you eat puts you in a tiny statistical group?

But dont they realize that a lifetime of eating poorly will make for a slow lingering death?
Healthy eating wont prevent you from dying....but there are different ways of dying. Old healthy people, usually die short quick deaths when all the body processes all shut down in a short amount of time. Unless of course...they die of some unnatrual cause.

Ya but the rednecks I know refuse to eat anything healthy even if it is given to them...expecally if it is organic.
All my redneck friends will not eat organic like a bad word, even if it were free.

All sweeping generalizations have a kernel of truth, if you cast the net wide enough. ;)

Put it this way, I have not met anyone yet within this demographic that will eat organic even if I give it to them....believe me, I tried.

It starts in childhood.

If you grew up on a diet of Frosted Sugar Bombs for breakfast, a MacThingie Happiness meal for lunch, and Kenyan Fried Ostrich for supper, then it is likely that (1) these are the only foods you consider to be real food, and (2) they provide an emotional 'comfort' that only Mom's Own Cooking can produce.

Add this to the fact that a meal of fast food means that momma can spend more time with the young'ns, poppa has more money to spend on cheap moonshine, and the kids get to have it their way even though they have it the same way every time. With fast food, nobody has to tax his or her creativity by trying out a new way to serve 'possum on their unsuspecting kinfolk.

Top it off with the fact that when I was growing up, the word 'Organic' meant something you might step into down on the farm, and it's no surprise to me that people who live close to the Earth would not want anything 'Organic' on their plates.

(There, have I sufficiently reinforced the 'Redneck' stereotype?)

Organic milk is often not pasteurized and can very easily make you sick, and the amount of fat in it is known to send many people to the bathroom in short order. A lot of the cooking and choice of restaurants is cultural. It's the same way in a lot of poor minority communities as well. The problem is that they aren't burning as many calories a day as their ancestors used to. Some choose to keep eating that way regardless of the long term consequences and some make changes. Personally I chose to make dietary changes so I didn't have to buy bigger clothes.

Crisco makes the best pie crust. The stuff just works.

Rednecks have gone for long hair and beards, but Whole Foods and Book Stores attract the wrong kind of people.

Anything Organic, means the rest of the food supply is tainted.

Organic, has healthy bugs.

Melons are killing people, and you are pushing raw unprotected food?

I will stick to boiled peanuts and cheap beer.

The main thing is change, autistics change faster than rednecks.

I don't like when people refer to a subgroup of southerners as 'rednecks.' Even when they call themselves rednecks, it feels derogatory.

the organic milk I buy is ultra pasturized and is 2 percent...it is no different than regular milk except the cows are grass fed and are not given GMO growth hormones.
I am not brave enough to drink totally unpasteurized milk. I have drank home pasteurized goat milk, which tastes nasty, but I never got sick from it.
btw...great post on the gun totin' developer. As an artist...I would be doing the same if some mob was going to screw up my work :D

Um.
So a lot of people would argue that dairy isn't healthy for you, or natural. A lot of people, including many here, have sensitivities to it, as does most of the world.

Just sayin'. Do you think "organic" is the end all, be all of health?

Organic not the final athority on health, but better than toxic pesticides, artifical fertilizers and GMO.

I try to eat organic to avoid GMO in my food...although it is so embedded in the food supply, it is hard to avoid. Even table salt has dextrose in it which is made from corn which is mostly GMO unless it otherwise states.

the best Pie crust I ever tried was made with bear fat, but that is very saturated so I guess it is grapenuts crust for me

Rednecks have gone for long hair and beards, but Whole Foods and Book Stores attract the wrong kind of people.

they can be anyoing...I should know

Anything Organic, means the rest of the food supply is tainted.

because it is.

Organic, has healthy bugs.

for us organic folks, bugs are protein :D jk

Melons are killing people, and you are pushing raw unprotected food?

forgive me, but the melons that are killing people are not produced organicly.

I will stick to boiled peanuts and cheap beer.

I like boiled peanuts too from time to time, but cant drink because of seizures however my friends say that I would make a silly drunk if I could drink. I will toast your cheap beer with my organic sparkling pear juice...aka in my family as "kid wine"

The main thing is change, autistics change faster than rednecks

thats impressive.

Thank you...that makes sense.
I hope I did not offend anyone by calling folks rednecks...
I do have a great example of the difference between a redneck and a hippie

Your car breaks down 30 miles out of town
If you call a hippie, he will say "duuude what did you do to get such bad karma??
if you call a redneck, he will say, Be there in five minutes.

See why I want my redneck friends to eat healthy, ya'll are the best!
