A mass murder we mostly have forgotten about: 10 Amish school girls were shot to death in their school in 2006. The families of the Amish victims immediately forgave the shooter (who also killed himself) and visited his family to give them support.

Quote: Amish Forgiveness in Response to School Shooting
In the midst of their grief over this shocking loss, the Amish community didn’t cast blame, they didn’t point fingers, they didn’t hold a press conference with attorneys at their sides. Instead, they reached out with grace and compassion toward the killer’s family.

The afternoon of the shooting an Amish grandfather of one of the girls who was killed expressed forgiveness toward the killer, Charles Roberts. That same day Amish neighbors visited the Roberts family to comfort them in their sorrow and pain.

Please don't throw that word around casually. I know you didn't mean it.
It is not 'casual' use to use the word 'stupid' in this context to describe a person who knows the difference between right and wrong, and yet chooses to do what is wrong. I fully meant to use it in this context.

People know that they have to study for exams or flunk out of school, yet they spend all their spare time hanging out, playing video games, and partying. Smart or stupid?
STUPID!!

People know they have to pay the rent or get evicted, yet they spend the rent money on entertainment and the latest fashions instead. Smart or stupid? STUPID!!

People know smoking or chewing tobacco causes cancer, yet they choose to smoke or chew tobacco. Smart or stupid? STUPID!!
People know that having unprotected sex could lead to pregnancy and/or contracting a sexually-transmitted disease, yet they choose to have unprotected sex. Smart or stupid? STUPID!!

People know that being the target of a high-speed police chase will result in multiple traffic violations, jail time and maybe even their own deaths. Yet every week (it seems) someone chooses to try to run from the police. Smart or stupid? STUPID!!

Here we have two boys who murdered three people and tried to hide in the northeast Canadian wilderness among the bears and bugs and without preparation and supplies for long-term wilderness survival, even though they knew that murder is wrong and that survival in the wilderness requires more than just stealing cars, boats, and supplies from the people in the nearest town. Smart or stupid? STUPID!!

It's like the man said, "Stupid is as stupid does!"

I withdraw my post based on your explanation of how you meant it. Perhaps the italics threw me off, thinking it was a slur. My apologies.

I feel more sad for the families of the victims.

would be interested to hear why Ezra is more sad for the murdering teen's families than the victims families?

Everyone is sad for the victim's family, there's really no need to even say so.

The shooters families are still ultimately victimized by their sons behaviours, but with far less people willing to openly admit they feel badly for them as well, despite the fact that the shame and pain their sons inflicted upon them is just as deep as the grief they inflicted on anyone else. Imagine it was your son, who could you turn to to express your sorrow and guilt and emotional anguish?

I understand all that...just odd to come out feeling sorry for the teen's families. I suspect the kid's got much of their values from their parents.

Even if they did, I doubt their parents saw them seeing things through to this outcome. If they did, this is time for them to reflect and improve as people.

To your original point, I'm curious to see Ezra's answer because I know I can't speak for other people.

To be fair he just said he feels bad for their families, not that he feels more bad for their families than the families of the victims.

I mean it would certainly be difficult having a family member go and do something like that. I heard the dad of one of them said he thought his son wanted to go out in a blaze of glory...I mean as a parent it would have to be really hard to come to realize that your kid has gone down such a dark path.

funeralxempire is right, and Ezra is right. No one owes a provocateur any explanation for a perfectly human impulse such as sorrow or empathy.

They just had their sons perpetrate a massacre, and what might have looked like a history-nut's WWII memorabilia collection suddenly was proven to be the trappings of that Satanic nostalgia for the Third Reich. Their sons are now dead and they are still, likely, trying to udnerstand what happened to them, what happened to their lives, what lies at the bottom of it all.

The five stages of grief--do those mean anything to you? They take time. Time, and in the age of the instant headline nobody takes the time to share with them. Remember, they were not the ones who did the deeds, the ones who committed murder and fled. They are likely somewhere between anger, denial, and despair. Here acceptance will be extremely hard to come by.

Every time I look at one of these condemnable right-wing/left-wing morality contests I end up feeling like I need a shower bath.

Probably something like two Columbine Killers, except unlike them these two found an actual ideology to cling to.

As I said there's something fishy when the father of Bryer Schmegelsky is choosing to get a paid interview with Australia's 60 minutes program to defend his murdering son?
https://www.9news.com.au/world/bryer-sc ... add83ae7fd

Is it ethical to gain financial benefit from your son murdering innocent people? I don't think the Fowler family or the Deese family would agree....

Hard to feel sympathy for this individual

Regardless of what Ezra meant (and who are we aspies to decide?), responding as if he was putting the shooters' families above that of the victims families is not conducive to rational discussion.

I read this somewhere recently: If I say, "I like apples" and get responses like, "So you don't like oranges?" and moving on to: "Well, what about dragon fruit, guavas and mangoes. Are you discriminating against tropical fruits?"

What Ezra said is valid, just the way it is. It is very likely the parents of the shooters are suffering. Are others suffering too? Yes. But that does not take away from the suffering of the parents of the shooters.

What I am trying to portray is that we can have compassion for all and it shouldn't be subject to judgment of society.

Agreed, but he's only 25% of the total parents involved. :nerdy:

Schmegelsky Snr should donate any proceeds from his interview to the families of the victims
