Kanye West Sells Swastika T-shirts After Days-long Antisemitic Binge Glorifying Hitler, Deletes X Account
Quote:
American rapper Kanye West's multi-day social media meltdown, which included a torrent of profanity-laced antisemitic, racist, and misogynistic messages, culminated with the announcement that he was deleting his X account.
The departure came after X owner Elon Musk said he had labeled the account with a "sensitive content warning," a move that reignited the ongoing debate over free speech on Musk's platform.
Just before closing out his account, West seems to have posted one more message, announcing he was scrubbing the website for his apparel company, Yeezy, of all items save one t-shirt with a black swastika on the front. "I've wanted to make this tee shirt for years," the now-deleted post read, "My greatest performance art piece thus far." The t-shirt now appears to be available for purchase from the website.
On Friday, West, who also goes by the name Ye, praised Hitler, called himself a Nazi, ranted against Jews and said antisemitism was "just some BS Jewish people made up to protect their BS." "I'm going to normalize talking about hitler [sic]," he added, "Hitler was soooo fresh."
He continued his antisemitic posts through the weekend, including during Sunday's Super Bowl, including a tweet attacking singer Kendrick Lamar who performed during the halftime show, writing, "KENDRICK IS BEING USED BY THESE WHITE PEOPLE AND JEWS AND SO AM I AS I TWEET IN CODE WORDS AND KISS ELONS ASS AND BEG HIM TO NOT CANCEL MY ACCOUNT."
Kanye's rants sparked numerous calls to ban the rapper from X. On Saturday, former Friends actor David Schwimmer, who is Jewish, took to Instagram to demand that X, and other social media sites "stop giving him a megaphone."
"Kanye West has 32.7 million followers on your platform, X," Schwimmer wrote, addressing Musk directly. "That's twice as many people than the number of Jews in existence. His sick hate speech results in REAL LIFE violence against Jews."
The actor added, "I don't know what's worse, the fact that he identifies as a Nazi (which implies he wants to exterminate ALL marginalized communities, including his own) or the fact that there is not sufficient OUTRAGE to remove and ban him from all social media at this point.
Before West deactivated his account, calls to shut it down ignited another round in the long-standing debate regarding X's relationship to the first amendment, an argument that has only intensified since Musk purchased the platform in 2022 and declared himself a "free speech absolutist."
Even among West's detractors, there were those who defended his right to express his thoughts, however reviled they might be. "Free speech is the foundation of a healthy society, we can't let censorship prevail," one such post read. "Let Free Speech Reign, it's the only way to ensure that all voices are heard and that we can have real conversations about important issues. Banning Kanye would be a mistake, it's up to us to engage with his ideas and respond thoughtfully, not try to silence him.
Others argued that the posts should stay up as a reminder of West's true colors. "Let Kanye keep posting," declared Nioh Berg, who calls herself "the most famous Iranian Jew on X."
"It's really important for certain people on this app to see the sheer mental illness contagion in their movement.
"Do NOT suspend him for taking his mask off. Let him expose himself," she added.
On Sunday, it appeared Musk had stopped short of a full ban, opting instead to mark West's account and several of his specific posts and videos as "sensitive content," a label that comes with limitations on who will be shown the content. Responding to conservative political strategist Joey Mannarino, who also demanded a ban on West, Musk wrote, "Given what he has posted, his account is now classified as NSFW. You should not be seeing that anymore."
Mannarino, like many others, reported that the embattled rap artist had begun to post pornographic videos on his X account. "Kanye West might be the first person I will ever support being banned from X," the message read. "Not because I don't believe in free speech, but because he's posting literal porn on the timeline."
Hours later, it seemed West had opted to see himself out, writing in a farewell post, "I'm logging out of Twitter. I appreciate Elon for allowing me to vent."
