What's the point of boycotting the Games?
The Games are coming--end of story. The sponsorships are sold, the media rights have been sold, the tickets have been sold. The Canada Line has bee built, the Sea-to-Sky expanded. It's all done. Boycotting is a pointless exercise.
If you want to make the point of waste, and focus attention on the ongoing issues on the DTES, the better approach is to get the message out there. Encourage people to come--encourage people to see both sides of Vancouver, the good and the bad.
Embarass the City into using its accumulated Civic Amenity Grants and its housing fund to restore the public housing components of the Olympic Village development. (And restore the cuts to city services, while we're at it).
Meanwhile, if you want to deflate the Olympic movement, boycott the sponsors. Don't watch NBC television, don't drink Coke products, don't eat at McDonalds, don't use Samsung electronics, GE light bulbs or Acer computers. Don't wear Nike shoes. Don't use a Visa card. And tell each and every company why you are making that choice.
