I just read on Daniel Temmet's blog that Kim Peek, the autistic savant who was the real Rain Man, died on December 19th. Sad.

Kim Peeks died of a heart attack at the age of 58...the national news media announced it TODAY, December 22nd.

often the national news media reports it after the family has released the information. It is ultimately the family that announces such stuff, unless someone leaks it to the media (Michael Jackson, Brittany Murphy, etc.) This was a private man with a private family that announced it in their own time, I believe.

I always find it interesting that Kim Peek is mentioned in relation to autism even though he did not have autism (unless I'm mistaken about that, but Wikipedia agrees with me). Kim Peek should be an inspiration to anyone with any sort of neurologically-based difference or deficit, or anyone for that matter.

He did not have autism

Aut to be topic

But his brain was very interesting, and different from the mainstream. Could he be an honorary Spectrum member?

The only silver lining is Kim won't have to live without his father. They where so close that if his father died before him, Kim would have been devastated.

RIP Kim

It doesn't matter to me whether or not he was on the spectrum. Heck, some of the people on here have different diagnoses but share characteristics with us.

More to the point Rest in peace Kim.

One might have thought that, with the connection to "Rain Man", which was a very commercially successful movie, and as I recall, generated some acting awards for Dustin Hoffman, this would have been a story of some significance that it would have been reported more than it has been. But it's always sad when someone dies too young, and Kim Peek was a fascinating person, whom I would have liked to meet at least once.

I always seen Mr. Peek as not only being extraordinary with his abilites but, his desire to not let his limitations keep him from enjoying life overall which, is something I try to do in my own personal life overall...

I believe Mr Peek will be a fine, shining example for many individuals with AS with his efforts. :)

Kim Peek was not an Aspie. He had a genetic form of mental retardation.

A 2008 study concluded that Peek probably had FG syndrome, a rare genetic syndrome linked to the X chromosome which causes physical anomalies such as hypotonia (low muscle tone) and macrocephaly (abnormally large head)

Thanks --- People still ask me whether I have a Rain Man disease.

I wonder, though, whether my autism is caused by genetic defects or external triggers (vaccines/cerebral injuries)...

Nevertheless, I will miss Mr. Peek forever.
