used to have a housecat that loved my late father, it was almost always sleeping on him. when he died, the cat went over to the bed he rested on for the last few months, jumped up on the now empty bed, sniffed at the mattress, and then most piteously howled/yowled. for hours. that seemed like cat-mourning to me.
i get the impression that many animals differ from humans more by degree of mental facility, and not as much by category of mental facility, as is commonly believed.
