I saw a doco on this and now feel I was too harsh on him. He seems lower functioning and has had a terrible time with police.

My main issue with this is him getting beaten that is a worse crime than stealing a $2 light fitting from a derelict building and those cops should be punished.

The fact he got beaten is f*cking sick and no less than an extreme case of bullying. They should be beating rapists and child abusers, not a guy with a neurological condition who probably didn't realise at the time he was doing anything wrong.

Exactly, utterly pathetic and an embarrassment to the uniform. The cops also caught a guy stealing a toaster so he could toast stale bread for his family (so he said, whatever), but they didn't get the thieves who took loads of stuff from two different sets of people I know, one of whom was in the Red Zone where supposedly no one was allowed entry to.
What - were small value-less electrical appliances the main thing to protect?!

Being autistic I don't buy the autism defense for any criminal behavior.

I had a friend who gave me rides to our Dungeons & Dragons meet up group was autistic. I asked him for his e-mail address he claimed he had an internet addiction so he no longer uses a computer. I did not believe him so I did a google search of his name and it turned up a sex offender listing with his name address and photo on it. As part of his parole he was no longer allowed to use a computer without supervision. His court papers came up too it turned out he blamed all his misdeads on his autism. His lawyer tried to say most pedophiles are on the autism spectrum but the judge did not buy it and gave him jail time.

Thank goodness for that! That's the last thing we need is 'all autistic people might be pedophiles' added to the list of misconceptions!

As for the current case, I do think that using autism as an excuse is not good, however it was a freaking light bulb! If he had been stealing Xbox 360s and PS3s then yes, I would say that something needed to be done but it was a light bulb!! ! Why didn't they just ask him to pay for some new ones?

If what the cops did was true that too is dreadful.
