Climate change certainly does seem to be taking up a lot of column inches lately - more so than in recent years as far as I can tell.

I don't know much about the science behind it, but from what I understand the scientific community is nearly unanimous in agreeing that mankind is having a significant effect on climate change.

The (supposedly) right-wing press in Britain tend to rubbish claims about climate change. I can understand the desire to do so, since the climate change issue is another stick for subversives to bash the West with. What's more, with the introduction of "green taxes" and secret spying bugs in wheelie bins, the British government is using the whole green thing to do more of what it loves the most: snooping on the public and taking their money away.

I also think it's overhyped. If there is supposed to be a Climate Change, than why isn't Northern Canada green, in the winter?

Its definately overhyped..

But I thought it was fundamentally accepted that the ice caps were melting?

If something happens slower than one life can comprehend, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist!

However, maybe the effects are negligible, I've read that Australia will be a series of islands in the next few hundred years, which sounds a bit ridiculous to me, but I don't think its impossible.

Yes the levels have always changed, however human impact MUST be having a huge effect on the environment, you can't pump all those things into the atmosphere without some result can you?

Climate change is definitely happening. But, is the cause man? I'm not so sure. After all, we did go through an ice age, and imagine the spike in temperature that had to occur to pull the earth out of that, and it surely wasn't caused by man made gasses.

The only sure thing is is that nothing will be done about it until it starts seriously affecting the population, after all, why would companies spend billions on a problem that they don't even have to deal with? We can't even get them to fix problems that they have to deal with today.

I've never heard that, but the widespread drought we have at present I think is a combination of weather cycles AND climate change.

Do you know the bush poem "We'll all be roon'd said Hanrahan ...." (I think its called "Said Hanrahan")

Yeah not read this thread but I have studied the issue and if we need to act there is
ony one practical solution pebble bed nuclear reactors. On ultra large scale. It was
in the news that Australia will/needs to expand uraninium mining and enrichment.
Any enviromentalist that is not pro-nuclear (the founder of green peace is) is living in
a dream world.

You're right.

Though a lot of humans have the old "if I block my ears and close my eyes it'll all go away" attitude.

There is a bit too much pessimistic "OMGOMGOMG we're all gonna DIE!! !! !! !! !" hysteria among my fellow left-winger, but yes, Global warming is a serious problem and is generally has not been over-hyped. The oil and coal industries have a vested interest in denying global warming is caused by humans for obvious reasons, renewables and nuclear energy would damage their profits. nearly all climatologists agree that global warming is happening and it is caused by humans.

That being said, it is foolish to believe that we are totally in control of our climate. There was a period of stagnation of the global temperature from 1940-1980. Some scientists believe this is due to increased volcanic activity, which has a more profound effect than anthropogenic emissions.
