Yeah, but it's not as bad as it seems. It's like Missing White Girl syndrome.... anytime it happens, they scream it on the news, and you sort of assume it's happening more than is being reported.

Yes, but the complex she had was because of post partum depression.

Actually, I heard post partum psychosis. Here's a link to an article about the condition:

http://www.pregnancy-info.net/postpartum_psychosis.html

Postpartum depression doesn't usually manifest itself in suicidal or homicidal tendancies like postpartum psychosis. A baby could surely be harmed from neglect, but that would likely be the worst thing a mother with postpartum depression could do to the baby. Drowning 5 kids (or microwaving one) would not usually be consistent with the ppd diagnosis.

Andrea Yates also had some other things going on. She had a psychotic disorder before she got pregnant, and was specifically advised against getting pregnant with her last baby due to her mental health. She got pregnant anyway, and went off her meds. She was actually hospitalized for psychosis before she killed her kids, but the HMO cut off payment (gotta love that) so the hospital kicked her out, and the psychiatrist she saw in there misdiagnosed her. I think that the husband actually sued them for letting her out while she was still a risk. The people in Andrea's life knew that she was psychotic, so I can't understand why she was left alone with the children. Anyway, here's an article on Andrea:

Ah! This explains a recent issue on Nationstates.

How long before all new microwaves MUST have a warning label clearly stating that babies should not be put in microwaves.
