The article was taken down as false. NASA says so, so now I think they are lying.
What we can track is a small part of the local stuff. For one, the killer track is coming from behind the Sun, a direction we cannot see. No plotted course would survive a close pass to the Sun, and dropping through the gravity well, it would pick up speed.
It is not the size, it is mass times speed that counts. A half kilometer chunk of iron traveling at 50,000 miles per second would do it, as in no one would see it coming, and it would reach the surface.
Kilometer to mile wide craters are fairly common. They also have a cycle in time. Every 26,000 years we get one or more. Also, the odds of hitting ocean are five to one, and everyone has flood stories. There is evidence we have been hit many times. Mauritania 26,000 years age, Barriginer in Arizona 52,000 years ago, and another in India.
Local junk has had its chance, things do get hit.
What fits the 26,000 year cycle is the Solar Sytem crossing the Galatic Plane. Like the rings around planets, random junk collects. I think it may take a thousand years to pass through this junk yard.
We are passing through an Asteriod field, none of which we can see or plot. Also, our motion is speeding through, it is just waiting. It could also become captured in the Suns Gravity, something new to fly around.
History records great daylight comets. Seen in the full day, covering half the sky. The last was 400 years ago. Rare, but they do happen.
My own thought is we have created worse problems. Climate, Food, Water, we are in for a rough ride, real soon, and no maybe odds, a sure thing.
We live in a fragile lie that all systems will keep working. California, which produces half of all prodouce is in drought, and say they do not have the water to continue, and prices will go up at least a third this year. Drought continues in the midwest, the grain belt, and things do not look good for corn this year.
We have been in an ice age for 150,000 years, with only three interglacial warm periods, One started 38,000 years ago, lasted 5,000 years. The ice returned, and 28,000 to 23,000 was warm again. This one starts 10,000 years ago, the Holocene, and has lasted twice as long. 20,000 warm years out of the last 150,000.
We are Doomed!
I planted a survival garden, I can grow enough to live.
