The left wants prison reform and the right wants low taxes and deficits.

There is a chance to make progress here.

Some sectors should never, never be left to the private sector, and prisons is one of them (along with education, police, defense, health, justice), private sector means making a profit, and in the case of prisons it means filling them up, while the public sector is not there to make money but just providing a public service, in this case protecting society by locking up the dangerous people who are a treat to society.

We never were. We had slavery until 1865.

The states had various blasphemy and sodomy laws.

Under the Comstock Laws literature was censored.

Negroes could not vote freely in the southern states until 1965.

Some states have "hate speech" and "hate crime" laws.

Late term abortion is illegal in many states.

And of late you can be fined for not buying Obama Care.

Well, still better overall compared to Mainland China by a long shot, but compared to other developed nations, a bit... dodgy.
At least you can mouth off about whoever's in charge (and rightly so) and only get death-threats from idiots, not actually disappear.
I guess every nation, developed or otherwise have the fair share of nasties... Some have more than others.
