Big bird is guilty of encouraging youth to get vaccines.

But I am not clear as to what the problem is with his new character that is provoking them to "defund" PBS. She must be awful.

I thought Tinks was accused of saying a homophobic slur?

Oh no; Jerry Falwell flew off the handle saying the Teletubby was promoting homosexuality.

I'm not saying Falwell was correct, but why did they design a character with a male voice but carried a lady's purse?

Never heard of THAT scandal. Thats some OTHER thing. I was referring to the teletubby with the symbol on his head that looked like the gay rights symbol, or something, that got Falwell upset.

Let's face it. Sesame street is a nightmare for any self-respecting MAGA.

As I recall it was the triangle plus the male voice and purse. I disagree with the triangle symbolism theory. But the character did have a distinctively male voice and sometimes carried a purse. And I don't think it's too unreasonable to ask what the creators had in mind.

I thought most of the humanoid puppets were non-human colors. Like green and purple and blue. Roosevelt Franklin was culturally black, but I think he was a brownish/purple color IIRC.

Thats my understanding. "Sesame Street" is an urban neighborhood with a mix of residents. Some Black, some White, and some Hispanic. But none until now being Asian. Obviously thats the human looking ones. Big Bird and the Cookie Monster arent meant for kids to identify with as being of their own, or of any particular, ethnicity.

But I am not as up on those shows as everyone else on this thread. I dont watch Sesame Street, or Teletubbies much, because they are all...over my head!

Thats why I settle for watching "Keeping Up With The Kardashians".

Howdy Doody didn't have these problems. But Captain Kangaroo must have seemed like advanced calculus.

In days long past, very few of the puppets in sesame street were actually all that human looking, such as oscar, elmo, cookie monster, and obviously bigbird and snuffy, with some looking quite bizarre. Among the most "human" looking were ernie and bert, who were both quite boldly yellow. Most of the puppets were arguably adults, with elmo being an obvious exception. At the same time, they were also usually complimented by a large number of real-life kids, often of varied ethnicities.

Over the years, many changes occurred, such as regulations relating to child labor, and funding challenges for PBS. As a result, they used fewer actual children. In the long run, it became more feasible to use more puppets, and less people. It cut costs and avoided legal complications.

So part of the reason it seems weird to see puppets of one ethnicity of kid or another on sesame street is cos at one time there really weren't any kid puppets of any ethnicity, or at all.

As for the republicans attacking a puppet, one can hardly be surprised. Many seem to prefer attacking things that don't actually exist in real life.

That explains it all.

I do sorta recall seeing more actual kids on the show back in the day, and now you see puppet kids, and few actual kids.

Well since it's a matter of muppets replacing human children, then the objection to them now introducing an Asian one would be, what took so long?

My guess is the person who objected in the article in the OP, is probably as out of touch with the current set-up as we are.

They wanted him to have a satchel.

I'll buy that.
