Water may bonded into complexes as waters of hydration, like MgSO4.nH2O (magnesium sulfate hydrate), as minerals on Mars. The waters can be removed, but it requires energy to overcome the bonds. That would not be very conducive to sustain life if it constantly has to expel energy to get water to survive. Water must be in free form for life to work well.

Brilliant! so the excitement life is thriving under the surface may be premature then?

If there is vast quantities of free form water, the probability of finding a form of life increases. Now take in mind that may be just single cell bacteria counted as life forms. Unfortunately, said bacteria would not leave fossils when they die, so there is a limit on how long ago they could have lived to be detected.

The outer environment on Mars is different than Earth, so said life would have to have adapted to those conditions to even have a chance to exist. The question of how life would gain needed energy comes to mind. It would have to come from sources other than sunlight if it was far under the surface. Radioactivity from minerals could be one possible source, but too much would damage life, not sustain it. The energy from radiation would decrease over long periods of time, as the decay processes are followed by the parent than daughter isotopes.

I am more excited about critters in the oceans of Europa

There's no way colonists could take advantage of water in any form if it's 10-20 km below the surface.

Unless they burrow.

What is Scientific Theory? According to Wikipedia:

A scientific theory is an explanation of an aspect of the natural world and universe that can be repeatedly tested and corroborated in accordance with the scientific method, using accepted protocols of observation, measurement, and evaluation of results.

When someone comes up with a theory, even a radical theory, it must be shown to have a basis in fact. It must be proved beyond a reasonable doubt. Sometimes theories can be very complex. For example, a few years before I was born some people had a theory that they might be able to create a new bomb, a bomb that produces a massive nuclear explosion. A team of scientist were gathered together and went to work.

The first atomic bomb was built in Los Alamos, New Mexico, during World War II under a program called the Manhattan Project. Los Alamos was approved as the site for the main atomic bomb scientific laboratory on November 25, 1942, by Brig. Gen. Leslie R. Groves and physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and was given the code name Project Y. One bomb, using plutonium, was successfully tested on July 16, 1945, at a site 193 km (120 miles) south of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The atomic bomb brought an end to the Second World War.

The first atomic bomb to be used in warfare used uranium. It was dropped by the United States on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. The explosion, which had the force of more than 15,000 tons of TNT, instantly and completely devastated 11.4 square km (4.4 square miles) of the heart of this city of 343,000 inhabitants. Of this number some 70,000 were killed immediately, and by the end of the year the death toll had surpassed 100,000. More than 67 percent of the city’s structures were destroyed or damaged. The next atomic bomb to be exploded was of the plutonium type; it was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, producing a blast equal to 21,000 tons of TNT. The terrain and smaller size of Nagasaki reduced destruction of life and property, but 39,000 persons were killed and 25,000 injured; about 40 percent of the city’s structures were destroyed or seriously damaged. The Japanese initiated surrender negotiations the next day.

I am a nuclear physicist. So I understand theories. But a theory is just a theory unless is proven. Just because someone can put forth a theory does not mean that it is a fact. It is just a theory. So when someone comes up with a theory, then other people step up to present other theories of why this theory is defective, why it will not work, why it is a piece of garbage. But the bottom line is "the proof is in the pudding".

What does the proof is in the pudding mean? The proof is in the pudding is an expression that means the value, quality, or truth of something must be judged based on direct experience with it—or on its results.

Life might indeed have been spawned in the early lakes and seas of Mars. But it would have been three billion years ago. Mars lost most of it water and atmosphere soon after that.

Life appeared on Earth four billion years ago, but did not vault from the bacteria stage to the ameoba stage (prokaryote to eukaryote cells) until about 1.5 billion years ago. And even then life stayed at the single celled stage until the "Cambrian Explosion" at round 600 My ago (from the ameoba stage to the jellyfish stage) when nature invented critters big enough to be seen with the naked eye. All the interesting stuff in evolution on Earth happened in the last 13 percent of Earth's history. Humans in the last heart beat, and civilization in the last bat of an eyelash.

Given the Earth timescale it just seems highly doubtful that Mars could have evolved an equivalent species to humans given how geologically dead Mars has been for most of its existence.

Earth is very different then many of the small planets in our solar system, such as Mars. This is because we have a large moon.

.

Thats true. Moon is far bigger, relative to its master planet, than any other moon in the solar system...except for Charon (which is almost equal to its master planet Pluto in size).

Mars has two moons but both are irregular boulders comparable in size and in shape to the island of Manhatten. There are moons equal to and even bigger than our moon...but they belong to the gas giants (planets much bigger than earth like Jupiter).

But...drop the other shoe. Whats your point? What does that have to do with the timescale of evolution on earth that I was discussing in the post you quoted?

proof of water? proof of life?
You open an interesting discussion on what constitutes a "fantastic discovery". For many planetary scientists the discovery of new geological materials or presence of water under mars will be exciting. For exobiologists the prospect of microbial life is tantalising. the latter is partly interesting to me but hardly "fantastic" or evidence Mars evolved life.

there has been ample evidence for some time that bacterial and fungal spores can travel through space
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a ... 7794904480

So finding bacteria on Mars is not actually proof that life evolved on mars. Many exobiologists are selling us cool-aid in not factoring cross-fertiilisation. there is no proof Mars had life < earth, we can speculate but it's not proof. What it does tell us is life can take hold in hostile environments, but given one has to dig/burrow 10-15km under the surface, its something we likely won't find out in our lifetime.

So, your a fellow scientist? strange so many science grads on this forum but little in the way of scientific debate? Overwhelmingly the scientific method is considered the best approach in science we have. But, over he years the use of the scientific method as a convenience is becoming apparent. For one thing the interpretation of data is often heavily biased when used to prop up dogma, less so for physical sciences but definitely when it comes to other disciplines like social science and psychology. I'm going off topic but things like cultural bias (scientific method is a western concept) should be factored whereby the peer review process tends to ignore non-western peers incorporating different ways of acquiring knowledge.

I am going to begin to unwrap this theory. But it contains many different parts. It is really an out of this world theory. To begin with I need to discuss the approach used by scientist in Bio Containment Units. A biosafety level is a set of biocontainment precautions required to isolate hazardous biological agents in a closed laboratory facility.

-- Biosafety level 1 (BSL-1): Considered to be the lowest of the four biosafety levels, BSL-1 applies to laboratory settings in which researchers work with low-risk contaminants that have little to no threat of infection in adults. For instance, a BSL-1 laboratory may work with a nonpathogenic strain of E. coli. These labs conduct research on benches, and hence, don’t use any kind of special containment equipment. Safety protocols for BSL-1 labs include mechanical pipetting, regular handwashing, safe sharps handling, biohazard signs, etc.

-- Biosafety level 2 (BSL-2): BSL-2 covers laboratories that work with agents related to human diseases. More often, these agents come in the form of infectious or pathogenic organisms that pose a moderate health hazard. Such agents include equine encephalitis viruses, staphylococcus aureus, and HIV. These biosafety cabinet labs adhere to the standard microbial practices as BSL-1 labs coupled with enhanced measures owing to the potential risks associated with these microbes. Researchers working in BSL-2 labs are expected to take extra precautions to prevent injuries like cuts, bruises, and other skin breakages. The safety protocols established for BSL-2 labs include the use of PPE, self-closing doors, and access to a sink. However, access to a BSL-2 lab is more restrictive than a BSL-1 lab.

-- Biosafety level 3 (BSL-3): A BSL-3 lab works on indigenous microbes that can cause serious disease through inhalation. In BSL-3 labs, common examples of microbes include the West Nile virus, yellow fever, and tuberculosis bacteria. Contaminants found with BSL-3 settings are strictly controlled through regulatory bodies. Here, the researchers are also under medical surveillance and may require immunizations to combat the impact of microbes. The safety control measures within a BSL-3 lab include the use of PPE, solid-front wraparound gowns, and scrub suits, access to an eyewash station, sustained directional airflow, and a self-closing set of locking doors.

-- Biosafety level 4 (BSL-4): BSL-4 labs are rare as they work with exotic and highly dangerous microbes like Marburg and Ebola viruses. These microbes create fatal infections and come without treatment. The safety protocols to be followed in BSL-4 labs include decontamination of materials and wearing the PPE from lower BSL levels apart from level 3 considerations. It’s one of the reasons why these labs are isolated and located in a separate building entirely. These biosafety cabinet labs also feature a supply of exhaust air, as well as decontamination systems and vacuum lines.

O.K. What is the point? Well what if the planet Mars contains an extremely advanced civilization of beings (not human beings) that is conducting experiments, very dangerous experiments. These experiments have been going on for millions of years. Earth is a Biosafety level 5 facility.

O.K. I know you are laughing right now. But what if this radical strange theory, just like the theory that created the first nuclear bomb was in fact TRUE.

So over the next few days I will begin to unwrap this theory. It is extremely complex and has many, many components.

You got the laughing part right.

MILLIONS of UFO believers are convinced that aliens are doing experiments on us via abduction. you're not the first to think of the idea. Thousands are convinced that they ARE said subjects of said experiments.

But most of the more scientifically literate of these believers assume that these said aliens are from some exoplanet orbiting around another star. Not from anyplace within our own solar system. "Martians" are passe' pulp fiction from the interwar Thirties at the latest. True believers seem to agree that they come from the Pleiedes star cluster (thousands of light years away).

Not exactly a "believer" even I have a number of unwritten "Great American Sci Fi novels" in my head that involve our solar system being a game preserve in some alien interstellar empire. The UFOs transport park rangers here to...capture, and tag the local humans, and then "release them back into the wild" to keep tabs on our "migration patterns" or other stuff our park service keeps track of.

Though from an exoplanet the aliens might be using Mars as a base of operations to...do their saucer thing on Earth! Buzz our servicemen, humilate human abductees, and mutilate cattle, and make crop circles...or whatever they fill their workdays with.

Close by bodies like Mars and Moon would be great staging areas for aliens from other solar systems to...bother us!

Mars might be covered with alien PX supply stores.

Why has he "gotten your attention" when in his post he has literally made NO point? And offered zero evidence?

Anyone can write a sci fi novel about aliens doing experiments of Earth and declaring Earth a hot bed of infection.

By why would the "aliens" be from Mars...when there is no reason to believe that Mars could have evolved intelligent life?

Aliens from another star system using Mars as a close by staging area to probe Earth would have SOME logic.

It IS an interesting premise for a sci fi novel.

He is looking at it from the Martian POV, and speculating that the Martians would view our planet as something akin to a toxic waste dump...infected with fecund vermin.

In fact there was a Nebula wining novel some decades ago (forget which one) in which the aliens were on a mission to "rid the Earth of Man...and other pests!".

This unproven theory has many, many, many different parts. So I will begin to unwrap this theory piece by piece. Let us start with the first post in this thread. It contains a story from the HISTORY Channel.

I do not believe that life exist on the surface of Mars. I am more focused on what exist within the planet. But what are these things that we are finding on the surface of Mars?

I suspect they are from Earth. When we take a trip we normally bring back souvenirs. These are things we collect from our journey. Scientist also bring back scientific souvenirs that are samples of their study. So what is on display on the surface of Mars are bits and pieces from their voyage to Planet Earth. Some of these relics may date back tens or hundreds of thousands of years on our planet. So the surface of Mars is a little bit like a trash heap, a trash heap from Planet Earth.
