See, you're relying on the assumption that those people are a monolith, but there's enough of them that there's bound to be people who agree with their basic premise (that removing tyrants violently isn't wrong) but don't agree with the entire package of ideas associated with the militia movement.

It's that fringe of the fringe who I'd be worried about. Even if gun nuts are 99/100 for Trump, there's still that 1% who aren't. Maybe they're disillusioned after being personally hurt, maybe they've always opposed him, however they get to that point there's enough of them that future attempts on Trump are almost guaranteed.

Trump was inches from being killed last summer so I can’t discount that possibility but then we get President Vance with MAGA’s still in control of all three branches of government.

There is some talk that the left is rethinking their pro gun control views. I don’t know how true that is but there is precedent for “radical left” pro second amendment activism. That said the left is way way behind the right as far as being armed is concerned.

And without it's figurehead the cult collapses.

JD Vance has all the charisma of a rotten potato, there's no chance in hell of him keeping the MAGA movement united.

Don’t need to be united about everything. The New Deal Coalition was far from united but they dominated policy and political discussion for five decades. Trump eventually will be gone but the basic MAGA “ideas” are now embedded in the body politic. Then as was discussed in the other thread the Democrats have this “talent” of making a large enough segment of Trump haters believe he is the lesser of two evils to turn a surefire wins into losses. There is a reason that might apply to Vance. Vance’s “blandness” does not create the enmity that Trump does. So maybe there are enough never Trump votes that won’t apply to Vance to overcome the always Trump votes that won’t apply to Vance.

I'm wondering of the ethics of US government sanctioning retaliatory cyberattacks on Russian infrastructure though? What if it resulted in hospitals being compromised and Russian patients dying? and would the US dare use cyberattacks on China who regularly sanction cyberattacks on their biggest trading partners (including Australia)?

I think you're underestimating Vance's big shortcoming. He generates hostility like Trump or Musk without any positive excitement to offset it (unlike Trump).

Without the cult of Trump distracting them from how his policies hurt them, a lot of Trump's base seems likely to turn on whoever his successor is.
