Many, many years ago, long before "ho" was used as an epithet, I remember reading an article about the training undergone by department-store Santas. They were specifically instructed not to say "ho, ho, ho". This was not due to PC considerations, but because the sound of a basso-profundo male voice speaking the phrase was thought frightening for young children.

Ah, so there is precedent.

But what about all the time "Jolly Green Giant" went "Ho Ho Ho" in the Green Giant produce commercials on television back in the sixties and seventies?

We had no TV for years when I was growing up, so I didn't think about that! Was the JGG always an animated cartoon character, or was he live-acted sometimes?

Maybe the deal there was to intimidate the kids into eating their vegies???

If your a woman who's offended by Santa saying ho ho ho, something's wrong with you. Whoever came up with this rule has way to much time to think about stupid nonsence. As for Ho Ho Ho scareing children, I've meant very few children afraid of Santa and normally it had nothing to do with the phrase.

I always think of hoeing the garden as the next thing, not a prostitute.

Kids would barely be able to pronounce that anyway, let alone understand what it means (not that they even should).

My children, the eldest in particular, could not be persuaded to climb into some strange guy's lap in the expectation of receiving presents for it in some indefinite future. We saved ourselves a few dollars in shopping-mall Santa photography as a result.

that is stupid isn't it. I would think that it is not the phrase that frightens kids. it is bad santas.
and i don't understand how any person considers santa's laugh as demeaning....
typical stupidity.
