Shock Treatment May Continue At Special Education School
On the other hand I bet theres a lot of different people out there who would like to go througth life camoflauged.
Dwarfs, Burn victims, Cleft palette, etc.
Would you trade your different brain for a different body?
Both may have emotional downsides from the ostritization but the thinking process would be closer to norm and relationships might be a lot easier.
I agree that while in the hospital waiting is really terrible. I joked to a neighbor the only way to get quick service is to be bleeding. He told me from experience thats not true. You have to quit breating to get thier attention.
I doubt these Shock treatment children are bored much. They seem to be from the part of the spectrum where you spend the rest of your life screaming.
I wonder how many of the kids who endure this "treatment" actually improve when the threat of an electric shock is removed.
The whole theory behind this place is behaviour modification, a form of psychotherapy aimed at encouraging adaptive behaviour and discouraging maladaptive behaviour by using rewards and punishments respectively.
I read an article about this place in a newspaper some weeks ago and the reporter described the way some of the kids were pleading for help. It sounds like a very unpleasant prison.
ECT is very different from this as I think the patient is sedated when shocked and the aim of the treatment is to improve then patients mood.
I read the same article . A kid holds up a sign "Please help us"
Yes they are Nazis. The staff can't even talk to each other.
having A conversation with another patient is a "reward" to be worked up to.
But these kids are the most violent extreme cases there are.THey've been kicked out of everywhere else.
Just go and watch the videos. Warning they and the photos are graphic.
I don't like defending this but what else are the doctors supposed to do?
You might be confusing two vastly different kinds of "shock treatment." Electric shocks given as aversives (punishments) are VERY different from electro-convulsive therapy, which is given under anesthesia (hence is painless, NOT a punishment) and involves electrical stimulation of the brain. The latter is used as a last-resort treatment for some mental illnesses including severe depression.
