Seriously though, many of these cases involve psychiatric drugs. Once you get off them, you start thinking of doing stupid things. Yet, is it right to forcibly monitor some one in order to "make sure" that they're "taking their pills" on a regular basis? That sounds like a police state. It's an icky issue.
And then of course you have several solutions: the previously mentioned monitoring, the outreach, gun control, etc. The funny thing is that the least viable solution (gun control) is the most touted. I'm far more interested in the outreach approach then in the gun control approach. Finding people interested in helping others can be difficult, but it is usually possible and doesn't require mountains of effort. Taking away all guns certainly doesn't work. Having more stringent background checks requires the establishment of another branch of bureaucracy that does more harm than good.
Needless to say, it's a messed up situation.
