State Offers Cross on License Plates
Property: yes.
Establishment of an official religion: WTF?
The government is just permitting someone (and given the religious composition of SC, pretty much everyone) to promote their religion. It indicates nothing necessarily of the government's stance, and any indication that it does is ridiculous. The government isn't the one displaying the plate. If the demand is insufficient to justify any other religion, that religion is no different from any other belief which may or may not be represented on a license plate. In the absence that the government is discriminating (rather than just not bothering due to lack of demand) on the basis of religion, this is nonsense. I can come up with a religion in 2 seconds flat. The idea that the government should pander to me is idiotic. Just because certain belief systems have the name religion as opposed to "environmentalism" is a purely artificial distinction. Either way, it's just one belief system getting recognition where another doesn't.
(for the record, I disagree with S. Dakota's decision)
