Thats nothing surprising. EVERY politician actually says stuff like that behind the scenes and rarely get caught in western countries.
When Arnold Schwarzenegger became governor of California in the same election in which his hapless predecessor was tossed out, he quickly threatened to terminate his political career by the number of dumb comments he made. He then learned that at least in America, all a politician has to do is humbly apologize to the voters, promise to never do it again, then do it again. Lather, rinse, repeat. He handily won reelection, despite the fact that his own party hated him. Meanwhile, Obama's comment that people cling to guns and religion because they have no possibility for improving their lives since there are no jobs and no way out, got the far right echo chamber jumping all over him. The fact that it was, you know, TRUE seemed not to matter. Eventually, Rush Limbaugh flat out suggested that Obama wasn't jingoistic enough for "real Americans", the type who loved Sarah Palin's thinly veiled race war rhetoric.
