When keeping in mind that, in many tribes of Africa their beliefs include it to be the done thing for men to have x amount of wives and partners - go figure why aids spreads so quick amongst them - but it is down to their own religious / spiritual beliefs perhaps that they do it - ironic!!
Amongst those who live by these rules, stopping the practice of 58 [or how ever many] 'wives' to each man is the best place to start I would say - that first and then condoms - no matter what the Pope says!
Interesting as two very different beliefs are an admixture of both.
Christianity has always looked down on sex...but to only be enjoyed by man and woman for procreation. I guess those two subjects will never get along with minimal acceptions.
Although I tend to disagree with the church's overall concept of sex, there is somewhat of a practical use for monogamy....Not for moral purposes but just the evidential fact that variants of sexual diseases do seem to spread more so with people in multiple relations than monagomous ones. In fact, it is not uncommon in some parts of Africa like Sahara for people to casually have more than one sex partner at the same time. This in fact increases the risk of getting it when one partner has been affected shortly before going on to the other partner. I've also heard that in some countries, men equate condoms to the value of masculinity in question. Not sure so don't quote me on that one...it was from documentary I saw a while back.
Add that and then the large galaxy of languages, religions, tribes, cultures, traditions, and so on.. And then the all consuming party of poverty which could mean anything like a shortage in needles, standards in living and tis true that many women in some parts of Africa still have a lower status.....as opposed to men. That would mean her opinion didn't count even if she didn't want to get knocked up in the first place.
Then Satan.....I mean Pope Benedict, hints that only fidelity and ethical living will alone save people from aids. Partially true....but I think most of us know what his subliminal code of ethics is. Those who "sin" deserve what they get and condoms will only encourage this kind of behavior. I mean if he really cared, he'd at least advocate condoms since it has been the only sure way so far to prevent aids even if there is that small risk. I mean anything's better than nothing.
Sometimes I wonder about that "caring" pope....
