Those are my feelings I just don't know if I would have been as polite in stating them as you.

Last week it was "Open Day" at my son's Catholic school and like most Catholic schools, it backs onto a Catholic Church.

There was absolutely no parking anywhere since all the parents and grandparents of children from kindergarten to year six (approximately 840 kids) were trying to park. My wife and I had about a 1km walk to our car.

Everything was going along fine until someone got on the loudspeaker and started calling out number plates and daying that Father Fred (name changed) was most upset that some people had parked in designated parish car spaces. No... it wasn't us, but we were walking back and we saw the priest telling off this poor mother with three children because she'd parked in this precious spot.... ...and .... the priest didn't need the spot because his car had its own spot.

I had to restrain my struggling wife who wanted to shout out "get a life" to the priest.

So I ask you.... is it just the Pope who is out of touch with the people?

It is quite possible for a condom to fail, however at the same time, using condoms to curtail HIV transmission is a much more realistic option than abstinence.

:wall: :wall: :wall: I am as disgusted by this pope as I was by the last one and I'm not even a member of the church. The very concept of of one person speaking for all members of a given organization is illogical at best and intellectually insulting at worst (please understand I have family members who are members of the Catholic church but they are, for lack of a better term, sane about it.)

And the pope is correct. All it would take is one defective condom for you to get HIV and I am sure those condoms they are handing out are of the cheapest kind.

One defect condom don't spread HIV to a million people. A million people with AIDS having unprotected sex will (in time).

The condom might not save you, but not using it at all will surely doom you. Pick for yourself.

When keeping in mind that, in many tribes of Africa their beliefs include it to be the done thing for men to have x amount of wives and partners - go figure why aids spreads so quick amongst them - but it is down to their own religious / spiritual beliefs perhaps that they do it - ironic!!

Amongst those who live by these rules, stopping the practice of 58 [or how ever many] 'wives' to each man is the best place to start I would say - that first and then condoms - no matter what the Pope says!

Interesting as two very different beliefs are an admixture of both.

Christianity has always looked down on sex...but to only be enjoyed by man and woman for procreation. I guess those two subjects will never get along with minimal acceptions.

Although I tend to disagree with the church's overall concept of sex, there is somewhat of a practical use for monogamy....Not for moral purposes but just the evidential fact that variants of sexual diseases do seem to spread more so with people in multiple relations than monagomous ones. In fact, it is not uncommon in some parts of Africa like Sahara for people to casually have more than one sex partner at the same time. This in fact increases the risk of getting it when one partner has been affected shortly before going on to the other partner. I've also heard that in some countries, men equate condoms to the value of masculinity in question. Not sure so don't quote me on that one...it was from documentary I saw a while back. :?

Add that and then the large galaxy of languages, religions, tribes, cultures, traditions, and so on.. And then the all consuming party of poverty which could mean anything like a shortage in needles, standards in living and tis true that many women in some parts of Africa still have a lower status.....as opposed to men. That would mean her opinion didn't count even if she didn't want to get knocked up in the first place. :P

Then Satan.....I mean Pope Benedict, hints that only fidelity and ethical living will alone save people from aids. Partially true....but I think most of us know what his subliminal code of ethics is. Those who "sin" deserve what they get and condoms will only encourage this kind of behavior. I mean if he really cared, he'd at least advocate condoms since it has been the only sure way so far to prevent aids even if there is that small risk. I mean anything's better than nothing.

Sometimes I wonder about that "caring" pope....

Huh?
What exactly is the gay issue you are referring to?
The Pope? Africa? The Catholic church? Condoms?
