Statues gone. Next up: movies. Followed shortly by book burning.

Orpheum theater won’t show ‘Gone With the Wind,’ calling film ‘insensitive’

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — “Gone With the Wind” will be gone from The Orpheum’s summer movie series, the theater’s board said Friday.

The Orpheum Theatre Group decided not to include the 1939 movie about a plantation in the Civil War-era South in its 2018 Summer Movie Series after feedback from patrons following the last screening Aug. 11.

“As an organization whose stated mission is to ‘entertain, educate and enlighten the communities it serves’, the Orpheum cannot show a film that is insensitive to a large segment of its local population,” the theater’s operators said in a statement.

Memphis’ population is about 64 percent African-American.

The historic theater in Downtown Memphis has shown the movie for decades, but this year’s event “generated numerous comments,” leading to the decision.

“While title selections for the series are typically made in the spring of each year, the Orpheum has made this determination early in response to specific inquiries from patrons,” the Orpheum group said.

The theater’s 2018 movie series will be announced in the spring and will contain classic films and more recent blockbusters.

I lived in Memphis for a time, the Orpheum is one of the grand old theatres with balconies.
Theaters show what their public wants to see,and their customers don't seem to be interested in this film.
Most summer movie events are directed at kids, and I just don't see many kids wanting to veiw Gone with the Wind.
Unlike the movie theatre in my old neighborhood, which featured Godzilla movies during summer break.
I never thought it was that great a movie, but then I don't like chick flicks.
If they start banning books, then I will get pissed. But that's nothing new,the conserves made sure that what used to be required reading in school was removed. No more Huck Finn,Tom Sawyer,Lord of the Flies. That happened right about the time I graduated, supposedly because of pressure from the Moral Majority, which was neither.
They supposedly got offended becuse Huck swam nekkid with Jim.

I understand Trump is not exactly credible but he was dead on with the basic "slippery slope" idea. Both in regards to the monuments and "both sides" comment he was right, but as usual the way he talked about these shed more heat than light.

Really? Then let's tear down and burn all the Martin Luther King statues as well. If there are statues of other black leaders, let's tear them down, too.

My point is, you can't erase history no matter how many statues you destroy.

EzraS often writes sarcastic posts which I believe this was.

If you look inside the oval office there's a statue of MLK behind Trump

We aren't trying to "erase history".

Those Confederate statues don't represent real history. They represent a fake version of history in which the Confederates were the good guys.

There aren't many statues of Hitler in America, and yet most people know who he was. We know who he was because we honor those who resisted his tyranny, and not him.

It's about butthurt after losing an election.

Liberal thought: All conservatives (or at least those who voted for Trump) are racists and, of course, all confederates were racists motivated only by hate. So lets get back at those bastards by attacking statues!! !

Replace those statues with these:

The film is nearly 80 years old and just now it's "insensitive"?
I'm insensitive so I know insensitivity when I see it and that movie is hardly insensitive. If it is I could come up with a list of ones that really are. If I were managing that theater the only reason I wouldnt show Gone with the Wind, or for that matter any other movie, would be out of concern that not enough ticket$ would be $old.

Exactly. The left is hysterical over Trump, and the statue mania is like when you hate someone in your neighborhood but can't get rid of him, you instead try to poison his dog.

The Communist Antifa guerrillas want to start a hot war, thinking that the masses will rise up to support them (the dream of Communist revolutionaries everywhere). In fact, in this country it's more likely that the masses will rise up and kill them. Or rather kill the cannon fodder they are sending onto the streets in black hoods; the leaders and financiers will never put themselves in danger.

The anti-Trump rioters and statue killers are what Vladimir Lenin referred to as useful idiots. I can't see them accomplishing much in a hot war except losing miserably and being exterminated by those they claim to be fighting for. I say give them their hot war (provoke them into it) and be done with it now.

Yeah, as ASPartOfMe said, this is Ezra's brand of sarcasm----you'll get used to it. (WELCOME, to WrongPlanet, BTW!!)

Also, just so you'll know about another person, you might talk to..... The person who posted at 8:22 pm (your time) likes to use words, like "we", "our", and "us", when he's talking-about the U.S; BUT, he's CANADIAN----so, IMO, it doesn't make sense, to use those words; but, for some reason, some non-Americans do that, on here.

I just heard, on the local news, that somebody from Baltimore, was in Charlottesville, "that" day----he got arrested for shootin'-off his gun, within however many feet, of a school (I forget whether they said he was a pro or anti-statue removal person).

LOLOLOL

Not to get off-topic, but I also just heard a commercial, for some kind of face-cream, for removing blackheads----it was called "Black Off" (or, "Black Away", or something like that)! ! How long do ya think THAT'll last, before someone calls-for IT to be banned?? LOLOLOL TOO funny!!

Now they can start removing all of the Martin Luther King statues in existence. Hey, it's only fair.

Yeah those Iraqis should have left all those Saddam Hussein statues up.
Since most of the Confederate statues are in areas with large Black communities, don't you think they veiw them the same way?A constant reminder of a whip across the back?
