Nigeria records chloroquine poisoning after Trump endorses it for coronavirus treatment

Health officials in Nigeria have issued a warning over chloroquine after they said three people in the country overdosed on the drug, in the wake of President Trump's comments about using it to treat coronavirus.

A Lagos state official told CNN that three people were hospitalized in the city after taking the drug. Officials later issued a statement cautioning against using chloroquine for Covid-19 treatment.

US President Donald Trump claimed at a White House briefing last week that the Food and Drug Administration had approved the "very powerful" drug chloroquine to treat coronavirus.

"It's shown very encouraging -- very, very encouraging early results. And we're going to be able to make that drug available almost immediately. And that's where the FDA has been so great. They -- they've gone through the approval process; it's been approved. And they did it -- they took it down from many, many months to immediate. So we're going to be able to make that drug available by prescription or states," Trump said.

He added: "Normally the FDA would take a long time to approve something like that, and it's -- it was approved very, very quickly and it's now approved, by prescription."

However, the FDA after the briefing issued a statement saying it had not approved the drug for use against Covid-19 and is still studying its effectiveness against the disease.

The poison is in the dose. Like most prescription drugs especially powerful drugs, if one takes too much of it they can die. There was a couple apparently in Arizona that found some of this type of drug in fish medicine and used it on themselves with disastrous effects.

Just like every time there is mass panic. It's not over how much of a threat there actually is, but over fear of the imagined threat.

That is why Franklin Delano Roosevelt said:

"The Only Thing We Have To Fear Is Fear Itself".

It is too bad those words of wisdom fall on so many deaf ears.

I think either panic or ignoring is wrong right now. The polarisation between the two seems especially unhealthy.

I don't think not prolonging total shutdowns for several more weeks or months equals ignoring. Shutting down for two weeks is already highly unprecedented.

I just don’t know what to do.

I would suggest maintaining your indoor air humidity levels between 40 and 60 percent RH and put a portable air cleaner in his room that has a UV-C sanitizer. The air cleaner will kill most viruses and bacteria free floating in the air. It will reduce his viral load while he is sleeping.

Florida governor mandates self-quarantine for travelers coming from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut

Quote:
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has issued an executive order mandating a 14-day self-quarantine or isolation period for travelers coming to Florida from airports in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The order marks the first large-scale attempt by a state to impose a self-quarantine period for domestic travelers and underscores the expansive measures elected officials are attempting -- and willing -- to enact as the outbreak spreads. The move raises questions about how the state of Florida could enforce such an order and whether it will be a constitutional issue because the federal government regulates interstate business, such as air travel.
"I hereby direct all persons whose point of departure originates from outside the State of Florida in an area with substantial community spread, to include the New York Tri-State Area (Connecticut, New Jersey and New York), and entering the State of Florida through airports to isolate or quarantine for a period of 14 days from the time of entry into the State of Florida or the duration of the person's presence in the State of Florida, whichever is shorter," the executive order says.

Explaining the move at a press conference Monday, DeSantis, a Republican, said, "Today there's over 190 direct flights from the New York City area to the state of Florida, and I would reckon, given the outbreak there, that every single flight has somebody on it who's positive for Covid-19," DeSantis, a Republican, said at a press conference Monday explaining the order.

He said travelers will be met on board planes by local or state law enforcement, as well as personnel from the Florida Department of Health, adding that passengers going to stay with family in Florida would not be exempt from the executive order.

"They'll have to meet on the flight, there will be some information taken, and I think they're going to do temperature checks, and they're going to be told you have to self-quarantine," DeSantis said.
The order states that violating "any isolation or quarantine directed by the Department of Health" is a second degree misdemeanor that could carry jail time, a fine or both.

While DeSantis has been active on some coronavirus measures in Florida, he's faced harsh criticism for avoiding a statewide mandate to close beaches, instead showing deference to local municipalities to make that decision.
The governor "doesn't want to be responsible if anything goes wrong," said a top Republican operative in the state, adding that DeSantis "is just kind of a step or two behind everyone. He is not being proactive, he is not being as public."

Tokyo Olympics: Japan, IOC officially agree to postpone Summer Games to 2021
Quote:
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics will have to wait. Japan and the International Olympic Committee agreed on Tuesday to push the games to 2021. The decision came after multiple conversations between Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and IOC president Thomas Bach. This marks only the fourth time in the history of the modern Olympics (which dates back to 1896), that the Games are being postponed. The three other times the games had to be pushed back were due to World War I and World War II.

"In the present circumstances and based on the information provided by the WHO today, the IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community," a joint statement from Bach and Prime Minister Abe read.
It was the hope that the Olympics could still be held as a distraction for what is going on in the world in terms of the COVID-19 outbreak. However, it was decided that the health of everyone involved was paramount.

"The leaders agreed that the Olympic Games in Tokyo could stand as a beacon of hope to the world during these troubled times and that the Olympic flame could become the light at the end of the tunnel in which the world finds itself at present," Bach and Abe added. "Therefore, it was agreed that the Olympic flame will stay in Japan. It was also agreed that the Games will keep the name Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020."

This is going to be for a while. The tri-State area is the hotbed for COVID-19.

It might lay around on surfaces up to 17 days.

Walmart was busy again today but they are running low on foods.I wanted Lucky charms cereal but I had to settle with Capt crunch, which is ok

I love the way Lucky charms marshmallows ferment in the milk and make each extra bowl sweeter.

Also loss of taste and smell might be a symptom of the Covid 19 virus says USA Today.

That would be great, except that the people who are already taking Hydrochloroquine for autoimmune disorders have decreased immunity, they are more at risk if they come into contact with Covid-19, and the drug won't help them recover because they're already on it. I hope there is another cure for those people.

The solution lies in community spread. If you kill off the coronavirus throughout the rest of the world, those with autoimmune disorders will never get this coronavirus because it is not resident in the community.

I agree 100%. That's why I don't want the general population to start milling about, breaking rules, and thinking that if they get sick there's a cure. Perhaps for them, there's a cure - but in the meantime they will infect compromised people who don't stand a chance. Furthermore, Hydrochloroquine is being hoarded around the world and those who have relied on it for years, can't find any. I already managed to get 30 pills a month ahead of schedule, but after that there's no guarantee it will be in stock.

The other scary thing is if we turn into Italy, where both retired doctors AND doctors of other specialties are being recruited to help, those doctors that are essential for some (eg neurologist) won't be available. Eg epileptic patient cannot get the urgent help needed bcuz neurologist is there

I'm sorry to hear your eldest is still having a rough go. :(
Has he been tested?

We're all good here despite some coughs. I booked my nephew's ticket home from the Gold Coast, leaving tomorrow. He'll have to stay alone at an Airbnb for at least 14 days when he gets home. He can't come to mine, my mother's, or my brother's. It's a shame because he was hoping to stay in Australia permanently.

This is one of the face mask (front & back) that my wife is fabricating for the war effort (War Against the Coronavirus).

There must be an abundance of volunteers. We stopped by Jo Ann Fabrics this morning and they had already given out the supplies they assembled last night. I guess we might have to go earlier tomorrow.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk made good on his promise to deliver ventilators to aid in the coronavirus pandemic, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday.

"I told you a few days ago that he was likely to have 1,000 ventilators this week," Newsom said at a Monday press conference, adding the ventilators arrived in Los Angeles and that Musk was working with the hospital association to get the equipment out. "It was a heroic effort."

Most likely the total collapse of the economy will happen sooner.
