[Mod]

We’ve had a few complaints about some of the discussions in this thread not being news about coronavirus.

I’ve had a look at the last few days of discussion and I don’t think there is much wrong here. Nobody is having completely unrelated discussions about the weather or sports or their favourite video games.

If you want to have a detailed discussion on the policy rights and wrongs then please consider whether one of the threads in PPR might be better. However this is just something you should do to be considerate rather than something you must do.

If you want to completely avoid jokes, politics, and so forth, then there is a thread in the Haven that might suit your needs.

It looks like the U.S. will surpass China in the number of reported cases soon. If that happens, than that's proof in my opinion that China has been lying about its number of cases given their population density far exceeds the U.S. population.

China, Russia, India, North Korea, and others are hiding information. It's not debatable.

Only one death in all of Russia.

Because Putin is such a great world leader.

All you other world leaders need to step up your game.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-heal ... SKBN21B2F3

"Russia has so far reported 495 cases of the virus and one death, far fewer than major western European countries.

Putin has previously said the situation is under control, but some doctors have questioned how far official data reflect reality, and the government on Tuesday closed nightclubs, cinemas and children’s entertainment centres to slow the spread of the virus."

I agree 100%. That's why I don't want the general population to start milling about, breaking rules, and thinking that if they get sick there's a cure. Perhaps for them, there's a cure - but in the meantime they will infect compromised people who don't stand a chance.

I'm *almost* tempted in thinking it was a mistake to be positive, through emphasising the mildness of the disease on young people.
But who would have thought that younger people would have been *that* selfish and irresponsible? <sigh>

Moit,
Isn't the shutdown planned to last for only a couple of weeks?
And then be reassessed?

How big a push, by the Democrats, is there for extended lockdowns?
Do they have a chance in succeeding, iyo?

Does anyone have info on whether any treatments have yet proven to be effective?

Also I was wondering whether a petition would work to have them call in the defense act to produce necessary medical equipment as mentioned before?

I was wondering about this too. In World Wars the world could use all the factories available for the production of weaponry why not do the same now for medical equipment?

Capitalism. The disease of greed, if they force them to make them for x value, they can't continue to force states to bid on limited supply.

We have bugger-all manufacturing in Australia, so it can't be done here effectively.

So one of the reasons might be because Russia is underreporting. That is quite possible.

But there may be another reason. Alcohol consumption in Russia remains among the highest in the world. According to a 2011 report by the World Health Organization, annual per capita consumption of alcohol in Russia was about 15.76 litres, the fourth-highest volume in Europe. So perhaps their love of vodka may have a medicinal quality that is under- appreciated.

---just a thought---

15.76 liters is equivalent to over 4 gallons of alcohol. That is a lot of Vodka.

Firstly, if I lived in Russia, I'd drink a lot too.

No secondly.

News flash!
NYC needs 30,000 ventilators.
They have 7,000

She is making them out of a variety of materials and patterns. So I am sure that the recipients in the nursing homes and hospitals will find one that is suitable. Even if one or two of them are manly men.

One problem though. Just as there was a shortage of N95, face mask and toilet paper, there is now another type of shortage. It is the 1/4" elastic bands sewn into these face mask. A decade or two ago almost all the fabric manufacturer shipped their production off shore. I suspect China. So now there is a shortage. I ordered some for her but it is scheduled for delivery a month from now. But most of the others listed on Amazon have a 2 month waiting list.
