"Dr. Phil" isn't a real doctor. And I'm sure the "family" of the "boy with Asperger's" got paid to do that show. We're talking about "TV land", it's NOT REAL. It's all carefully arranged for the entertainment value. And these talk show hosts always uphold whatever ideologies the powers that be want the general public to believe in. This show accomplished it's goal because it created alot of publicity. I'm sure the show upped the ratings. Dr. Phil is a snake oil salesman, he knows it, the show's producers know it, and every person with a brain in America should know it.

I always liked Phil Donahue though. He was good.

I think Dr Phil is a quack. I dislike the way he bullies some of the people he's supposedly helping. I also think he's guilty of emotional pandering to his (mostly) female audience.

However, I don't doubt that there are people who may have seriously benefited from his advice so I don't discount him completely. And I must admit I get a little schadenfreude from watching some of the shows.

What bothers me, is that now people are going to think that people with AS are normally like the Teen who was on his show. They take a Difference, make it out to be "Extreame" and than they call it a Disease. I am NOT Diseased! I'm unique! I think that a lot of it could be Acting, as well.

Hmm, don't know if that episode ever reached Ireland, we get his show here and some of it seems OK. Recently there was an episode on Hurricane Katrina. However, back to the matter at hand, an extreme disorder, yeah right.

I just saw that show - and I liked it, for ONE reason. What reason? He gave the address of this website, which was all new to me.

Other than that, I didn't like that you heard of two boys with Aspergers, one who was in jail for murder, another who's father was so scared of him he hid all sharp objects from him.

Nice going!

And yeah, the mother was yelling more than the kid was. Haha.

I like Dr. Phil. He actually has something to say. It's ironic really - of all the medical professionals I've seen, he's one of the very few who's actually helped me in some way. He may not always have all the answers (or even questions), but then he doesn't "expect you to substitute his judgment for your own"

As for the actual topic, I don't see why people complain when they think something is being portrayed the wrong way somewhere. What? Everyone will think that's how it is just because some guy says so on TV? People don't have a mind of their own anymore?

Dr. Phil claims to help people, but he is basically just another sensationalist talk show host no different from jerry springer or montel. Even a title like "extreme disorders" gives one the impression that the episode is concerned less with helping/understanding tourette's and asperger's and more with simply pointing at it, almost like a circus side-show.

What if they made a TV special that was made by people with ASD's for people who aren't familiar with ASD's? Except, it would take a lot of time and a lot of money. But it would be cool since they could show that on TV instead of people believing what Dr. Phil says about autism, or at least have a different view than what's normally on TV. I still think that people would still listen to Dr. Phil, since he's a popular TV figure, and that's typically how it goes most of the time. Just a thought I guess.

This may be a one-sided perspective, but if this is what people with Aspergers really act like, then call me schitzoid any day!

Also notice at the end of the transcript where Dr Philly calls it a disease

Oh, my...I live in new orleans...didn't lose my house but i've of the stories from my few friends *shudders* I wonder how that episode went :?

The thing about the kid wanting to be alone is something that I often feel when I come from school. I'm trying play piano and can't be distracted or I just need time to put on my music and relax. I don't start screaming though. In fact I don't scream that much at all...

I need to read the other transcripts later though. Goo Goo Doll's Broadway has been playing over and over in my head again. If I listen to the song then the repeatings will go away. tata!

I always thought Dr. Phil was the real life Fraiser Crane, not actually good enough to have his own practice.
