This is a most unusual discussion. You want cut demand (SS benefits) and increase the workforce at a time of high unemployment. Would any of you want to guess what the unemployment rate will be after this ?

I think it's appropriate to phase any change over the space of a few years. The U.S. is in a budgetary catch-22 at the moment -- cut spending now and risk damaging recession, or defer it and risk rising interest rates.

Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich came up with an idea I support: implement budget cuts IF GDP growth stays above 3 percent for one year AND unemployment below 6 percent for the same time period. This trigger could only be broken with a 2/3 vote in Congress. This would give the markets an ironclad committment that we are serious about cutting debt.

A company I worked for (as a contractor) had Robert Reich, former secretary of labor as a guest speaker. He was slightly delayed in arriving and the spokesman said over the loud speaker ---
Robert Reich will be with us shortly.

Note: Reich stands about 5 feet 4 inches tall (or short).

He is a glib slick shallow thinker. Very typical of the American liberal establishment. A scholar like Thomal Sewell could make mincemeat out of that cute little guy.
