One thing we have learned in recent years is that it is not only the storm surge and wind with tropical systems but the amount of rain that falls could be the worst aspect with the tropical systems. Tropical systems is the key word. Be it a category 5 hurricane, category 1 hurricane, tropical storm, tropical depression, or subtropical low, they all have the potential of dumping too much rain for any sewer systems to handle.
With Helene all the media at first focused on the Big Bend area of Florida where it made landfall. It did a lot of damage there. Helene was an unusually large storm so it damaged a large area. While Helene was far from a hurricane when it got to the Asheville region residence had two things going against them. It is in the Blue Ridge Mountains. When a storms move into mountains the mountains ring out the rain. Helene was blocked by other weather systems so it could not move through the region.
