I am convinced that is crap, and I am a very intelligent person, much like Sheldon.

Does the story about "The king who has no clothes" have relevancy here?
I think we are on the other side of that fairy tale.

The bought facemask I, errr, bought many years ago uses strings instead of elastic cords.

Yes many people are making those as a last resort. But it is very difficult tying the strings in the back of your head. At least that is my wife's opinion and you do not want to mess with her. 8O

My cloth face mask can be pre-tied and slipped on.
I guess it depends on the design.

Can they make it like the same fabric but thinner (rolled into a strap or sewn as a strap) with velcro at the back?
Velcro is very easy to find

I hadn't thought of velcro, Kudos.

I'm looking at sewing elastic on Amazon and I'd be willing to send lots to you jimmy. Unfortunately it's all on backorder until May or June, like you are finding in Indiana. :(

Maybe you could post a request for anyone who sees sewing elastic online or in shops, to send you some. Perhaps you've already made that request but I haven't scrolled all the way back through this thread. I'm sure there are people here willing and possibly able to help. More hugs to your wife for her efforts, and to you for all your updates about safety.

The John Hopkins University Sick Map site as of this writing shows global confirmed cases at 782,365 and deaths at 37,582. That's nearly 5%.

Let's hope in one respect that the number of unconfirmed cases in the world is orders of magnitude higher than the confirmed cases which would bring that alarming 5% number down much lower in reality.

I read today that the virus is transmittable not just by droplets (e.g. sneeze cough) but simply by air; as if it's gaseous. I think it's far more contagious than we've thought up to this point. Ebola precautionary measures are needed to protect medical workers? I think so.

A few minutes ago I checked the worldometer to see how many more cases there were. I thought to myself, "has it broken the 1 million mark?" and then laughed out loud when I saw it was still only within the 700-800k range. That is like 1 out of 1,000,000 people catching the virus. Which I find very hard to believe.

Sheldon would correct you by telling you it is "The Emperor Has No Clothes" and even that is incorrect since the actual title is "The Emperor's New Clothes".

I was speaking figuratively, which one should not do with math.

This is really hanging up volunteers from fabricating face mask. I ordered some for my wife but it is being shipped in from China. It is a real bottleneck. Many face mask designs use a thin strip of metal to conform the mask to the nose. I exchanged thoughts on workarounds. I bought a roll of aluminum tape which is normally used for metal ductwork joints. I thought that might be a workaround.

In our local group of mask makers, the design uses fabric strips, not elastic cords. As for the nose bridge, I told my wife to use 22 AWG solid copper wire. That's the standard wire for electronics (as in breadboard), so I have plenty of it at home. Here is a picture of it:

My wife delivered a batch of 73 masks yesterday. Hurrah! The demand is very high from small clinics and from retirement homes. Anyway, there is a standard drop-off point, where they wash the masks before delivering to the various institutions.

I went online only to find that there isn’t any cough mixture anywhere for under £10 ! !

That’s a disgrace !

I am pretty certain we'll be back to work and back to school before June.

That's bananas. I imagine it will end up being rescinded way before June 10.

With the exception of Italy (where numbers have slightly increased), all-cause mortality rates in Europe are currently normal – about the same as they are every year: https://www.euromomo.eu/index.html

In other words, there currently does not seem to be any "excess mortality" because of the coronavirus (except perhaps in Italy).

@Darmok, that makes sense to me, since we haven't actually arrived at the point where everything goes to hell.

Everything that governments are doing is trying to prevent that scenario: where the hospital system is so overwhelmed that death rates skyrocket.

Now as to the effectiveness of the current policies, I can't really say, but then the experts themselves are trying to wrap their heads around that, though they seem certain that current mitigation policies are sure to do something.
