It's hard not to get sucked in. And Goldfish as a pro at sucking people in. He used to do it to great lengths with his autism treatment routine until the mods finally put their foot down on it.

Not once do I recall in my conversations with them that any were fixated on the U.S. or talked about the U.S. being an overwhelming negative force keeping the good Canadians down. These conversations also took place after work hours in the bar where surely the topic would have come up if it was a commonly shared trait of Canadians in general to hate on the U.S.

An interest isn't the same as an obsession, but if you're going to insist that Canadians don't ever have an interest in American culture, government or society you're entitled to, because you're entitled to be wrong. Considering most of the people I know are Canadians I feel as though I'm in a slightly stronger position to make observations about the society I grew up in and have spent my entire life immersed in.

The person in question displays more than just an interest and that is what prompted Magna's and the OP's reaction. We have many people from other countries here who show an interest in American politics and society. But only a couple of them go at it hammer and tongs in a continually contentious manner.

And the other thing that I scratch my head is why is a Canadian so hell bent on discussing U.S. politics.

Erm, it's Canada's other national sport. It ranks behind hockey but ahead of lacrosse.

It’s because our economies and politics are so intertwined that almost all the stupid s**t they do down their affects our country. Imagine having Tiger King for a next door neighbour & business partner and you’ll understand why Canadians have something to say about the s**tshow south of the border.

I know people who live in Canada and not a single one of them is transfixed and obsessed by the U.S. or its politics. None of them believe that Canada is an unwilling conjoined lesser twin to the U.S, unable to function effectively because of U.S. politics/economy. In fact I know an expat couple who moved to Canada more than twenty years ago and have since become Canadian citizens. Save for a few relatives still back in the U.S., Canada is everything to them. The U.S. doesn't factor into their daily lives at all and in no way occupies their thoughts.

How many of them? You've had multiple Canadians you know tell you the exact opposite of your claims in this thread.

In present day Canada, American politics is discussed Far More Often than Canadian politics because everything is bar s**t crazy South of the border rn and it’s just ho-hum boring business as usual up here. The trump circus s**tshow is like a never ending train wreck we just can’t look away from.

Pretty much every Canadian has an opinion about America right now, but we’re also smart enough not to discuss politics with Americans. Everyone I know that spends any time across the line has an opinion on trump but they say NOTHING down there because they know damn well how “passionate,” some trump supporters can be. The only reason you don’t hear Canadians talk about American politics or Americans in person is because we are both polite and smart enough to zip it for the purposes of self preservation.

Got it.

So...all Canadians feel that the U.S. and Trump even more so rule and ruin their lives but they refrain from sharing this with Americans (except on autism related forums?) for fear of violence or death but commiserate freely and often with each other on the subject because there's nothing interesting or worthwhile for Canadians to talk about specific to their own country. By nature of their proximity to the U.S., Canadian's lives are unfulfilling and in effect they've been robbed of the ability to live the kinds of lives they'd like to live and it's the fault of the U.S. and more specifically, Trump. In certain respects, their lives have been ruined; ruined by the U.S. and ruined by Trump.

Fish, you don't think my WP name has an association with MAGA, do you? That's funny if you do. It has no affiliation or intended affiliation with MAGA.

I'm sorry, Jimmy for being part of derailing this thread. I simply couldn't sit idle without commenting.

I never said ruined by America or trump. I said AFFECTED. Which is why we’re entitled to have opinions about such things.

It’s not a “routine,” as in a made up skit. It’s very real. Not my fault you don’t seem to understand it.

Definitely remember requesting that you knock it off with your trolling posts towards me. Maybe you do want me to use the report button every time you have lies to spread about what I’ve shared here?

Larry David is a real person? I thought he was just a character on Curb Your Enthusiasm. Always stuck me as a rip off of George Costanza on Seinfeld.

isn't it quite possible that we are facing a pandemic so contagious, that all methods to curtail it eventually fail?

If so, do we have a sufficient supply of morphine, fentanyl and tramadol to provide adequate end of life care for all the patients who are currently expected to require in home palliative care?

The mortality rates on this coronavirus appears to be around the 1 percent range. For every hundred people that contract the coronavirus, 99 recover.

There are two other points to be made here:

1. If a country walks away from treating the infected patients, then the mortality rate will increase substantially.
2. When a person contracts the coronavirus and survives, they build up an immunity to becoming reinfected. So the concept of "herd immunity" comes into play.

Thanks Jimmy., I'm not advocating letting it spread like wildfire, I made that comment in response to ounion2 pointing out that hospital tents are standing empty in car parks waiting for a wave of infection that hasn't arrived.

A nurse at my local hospital said that they are expecting the covid assessment ward to look like "a very different place" in a weeks time. That's in a city 75 miles from London.

There are these reassuring theories being bandied around that half the UK population "might" already have antibodies and so on but does anyone even know how true that is for any of the epicenters? I don't think so.

Watching the rate of infection slow down in Wuhan was reassuring but considering that the the population is just 11 million out of 1.4 billion who now have some unquantifiable level of herd immunity that leaves an awful lot of people that don't.

It all reminds me of the Australian bushfire that we saw, at first there were a few concentrated fronts but the smaller fires kept on multiplying and escalating.
