Coronavirus patients delivered to hospital ship Comfort in New York by mistake: US officials

Quote:
Multiple patients infected with coronavirus were transferred to the hospital ship Comfort from the Javits Center in New York by mistake, three U.S. officials tell Fox News.

The number of Covid-19 patients brought on board the hospital ship was estimated to be “less than five,” one official said.

This information has not been previously reported.

The patients were transferred sometime Friday, according to the officials. At the time the patients were transferred to the hospital ship Comfort, the initial screening did not indicate they were positive, officials said.

The hospital ship is located on Pier 90 on Manhattan’s west side and arrived in New York Monday. The vessel has a “couple dozen” patients on board right now, according to chief Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman.

Part of the protocol before receiving patients onboard Comfort is for a coronavirus test to be performed. The swab test came back hours later, the patients remained in isolation and spent a night onboard the vessel, which is only supposed to treat trauma patients, not Covid-19 positive patients.

About a dozen patients from the Javits Center in midtown Manhattan were transferred to the hospital ship Comfort one day after President Trump approved New York Gov. Cuomo’s request to have Covid-19 patients treated at the Javits Center.

All the patients at Javits Center were then transferred to the hospital ship a short distance away where they were isolated and tested for the novel coronavirus.

Up to the point of embarking aboard the hospital ship, the patients had only filled out a questionnaire and had their temperature taken as part of an initial screening process. It’s been reported that half of people infected with coronavirus show no symptoms, according to the latest data.

The Covid-19 positive patients have already been delivered back to the Javits center Saturday morning to continue their treatment, one official said.

The Javits Center has been transformed into a 3,000 bed makeshift hospital by the Army Corps of Engineers.

The officials called the risk to the hospital ship’s crew “low,” because of the protocols were already in place.

“We were prepared with a contingency plan in case we received patients that later tested positive. Immediately upon arrival the patients were isolated while awaiting the test results,” the official added.

Another official pointed out this was why the hospital ship did not want to fill all 1,000 beds on board too quickly because the risk of the virus coming on board is so great.

The Comfort crew is scrubbing the area where the patients were housed on board. All U.S. Navy medical personnel were wearing complete PPE (personal protective equipment), the officials added.

“We have infectious disease specialists on board as well,” another official said.

Cmdr. Ashley Hockycko, spokeswoman for U.S. Second Fleet, told Fox News: "While admitting patients who were transferred to USNS Comfort for treatment, a few patients tested positive for COVID-19.

"The Comfort has infection control procedures that are followed just like hospitals ashore. Our medical experts on board are well prepared for cases like this, and have taken the appropriate precautionary measures. The patients were isolated and received care aboard the ship while working to transfer the patients as soon as practical to the Javits Federal Medical Station, which is treating COVID-19 patients. The Comfort is capable of continuing its mission.”

Right now both hospital ships Comfort in New York and Mercy in Los Angeles do not take Covid-19 patients, but top Pentagon leaders are “reassessing” that policy, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army Gen. Mark Milley, told Fox News’ Harris Faulkner Friday afternoon.

That decision is “not imminent,” a Pentagon spokesman later said in a press conference Friday.

The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 3,500 people in New York, a number that has doubled since Wednesday.

Teens flout NYC social distancing rules in Brooklyn street brawl
Quote:
A group of teens were caught on camera flouting social distancing rules as they brawled outside a Brooklyn apartment building, video posted on social media shows.

The nearly two and a half-minute clip recorded Thursday afternoon and posted on Facebook shows nearly two dozen teens pushing, shoving and punching each other outside an apartment building on Mother Gaston Blvd. near Eastern Parkway in Brownsville.

Some of the teens jumped up on parked cars and ran into the middle of the street, blocking vehicles trying to pass through, the video shows.

“This is no mother f------ social distancing, this is getting into it!” the man recording the video says from inside a passing car.

“This is like some World War Z s---, yo!” the man said, referencing the zombie apocalypse movie staring Brad Pitt.

Police arrived within minutes and broke up the fight, with one cop grabbing a young woman — wearing a mask — and throwing her into the street, the video shows.

The window to the apartment building was shattered, but no injuries were reported.

An NYPD spokeswoman said that cops were called to the scene after someone reported two people with a firearm.

No weapons were recovered, nor was anyone arrested or given a summons, the spokeswoman said.

They will individualize in the designs on the mask they wear. There will be trends in styles.

COVID-19 mortality rates for the elderly are very high. Putin is 67 years old. So he is vulnerable.

Dr. Mehmet Oz reviewed treatments being used to combat the coronavirus and for building up the body's immunity.

“You can enhance the immune system with convalescent plasma therapy,” Oz said, explaining that the process involves giving antibodies made from a recovered coronavirus patient to another who is ill from the virus.

"That seems to jumpstart them," Oz said, referring to the patient's own resources.

Oz said that "high-dose vitamin C" might play a role in building immunity as well, but said the "jury is still out" on the effectiveness.

As far as treatment, Oz said that preventing the virus from getting into the cells by taking hydroxychloroquine is showing promising signs in hospitalized patients.

“That’s the malaria drug, we believe that’s one of the mechanisms which can play a role.”

The Food and Drug Administration has put in place an emergency-use authorization to try these drugs despite the lack of conclusive evidence of their effectiveness. Politico, citing three officials, reported that the move would allow more manufacturers to produce the drugs.

Oz also said a dose of zinc can help. Not only can the coronavirus be blocked from getting into the body’s cells, but it can also be blocked from replication.

Oz cited the drug remdesivir as being a promising method of blocking viral replication. He said the jury is out on whether the drugs lopinavir and ritonavir are effective.

“These are promising therapies. Some of them have not shown the efficacy to the degree we’ve desired but these were designed for other illnesses like HIV and ebola. Now they’re being utilized in a more aggressive fashion in these different trials because, in theory, they should work," he explained.

Oz said the drugs pirfenidone and aviptadil may prevent the inflammatory system from overreacting to the virus and are in the experimental phase.

“The complement storm, so to speak, when the body just can’t keep up with the virus,” Oz said.

Though both of these drugs are “experimental,” they worked on other “horrible infections” and are promising for fighting coronavirus.

Oz also said that Losartan, a blood pressure medication, works at the same receptor that the virus uses to sneak in the body's cells, but said the jury is out and more study is needed.

Meanwhile, in a joint study by the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), the National Strategic Research Institute at the University of Nebraska and others, researchers found genetic material from COVID-19 in air samples both inside and outside of confirmed coronavirus patients’ rooms. The findings offer “limited evidence that some potential for airborne transmission exists," researchers said, though they warned that the findings do not confirm airborne spread.

Source: Dr. Oz goes over list of 'promising' coronavirus treatments

I have said several times that one of the transmission routes is that in low humidity environments (40% RH or lower) the virus particles will dry out and become airborne. As a result one must integrate UVC radiation to sanitize and kill the viruses to stop the transmission of the infection.

He is just vulnerable as everybody else. Don't think it's a problem. But may be we need better viruses. The number of people on this planet is still rising and it wouldn't change the fact that life is deadly enough that nobody will survive it either.

I can never understand the logic of someone genetically engineering a virus to kill people. Why would you want to extinguish the human race? I think this is an elitist phantasy. Somehow they think they might kill off the masses but then they would be the ones that survive. "Murphy's law" always says otherwise.

I remember reading about a great famine that struck the Middle East several hundred years ago. There were many wealthy families that had a multitude of servants. The families let their servants go and fend for themselves. Months later when they entered the houses of these wealthy families, they found the occupants all dead. Yet there was food in their pantries. The problem was that these individuals had never cooked a meal in their lives, they did not know how to cook and as a result, they starved to death.

I want a VERIFIABLE source which states that new hospitalizations have gone down in NYC.

The figures, as stated on the www1.nyc.gov, reflect the fact that there is a delay in the data.

It would be nice if this represents an actual trend.

You just gave me an idea about some of the masks I am making if I can get the supplies to do what I am thinking.

New cases haven't gone down, if the two are synonymous. If not I've got no insight.

Was just a sarcastic statement of me and of very dark humor even that the number of humans become a problem. Our planet deserves protection of course. But I guess that the thing that solves the problem won't be a biological one.

There has been some interesting statements in the Presidential COVID-19 new conference today.

It appears that Italy and Spain have hit their peak and the infection rate is going down.

It appears that people with lupus and using hydroxychloroquine appear to not be getting infected with the coronavirus.

Also many African nations where their citizens have been using hydroxychloroquine to treat malaria, have seen low infection rates. (I noted that correlation a month ago.)
