I agree with what AspieCard and VeloDog wrote, but feel the need to make the slightly off-topic point that the civil war was much more about states' rights than slavery at all. Robert E. Lee was an abolitionist and was the first person that Lincoln asked to lead the Union army. Slavery was an issue in the civil war, but it was far from being the entire issue.

Eh, states' rights were in the mix, but as is generally the case, the Civil War was fought primarily for economic reasons.

I just think it's funny. Nice to see a church not being so uptight.

Kentucky isn't in the South. Kentucky did not side with the Confederates in the civil war, they were a border state, hell, Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky.

LOL. You've got my vote for debate winner right there. Besides, if this thread gets any longer, a Godwin's Law violation seems imminent.

y'know i think i actually said this in another topic (maybe i'm getting older already o.o ) but i think i said that damage from a gun is rather lethal, whereas karate or any martial art exploits weakness in the body to destabilize the opponent (or leave him temporarly crippled for you to make your get away), never enough for you to take his life (although i'm sure some people think that way). So hrm, at equal chances, i'd rather duke it out with my fists rather than a shooting bout, at least both of us have a higher chance of getting out alive (yet admittedly injured but a swift recovery should still be doable).

But that is not always swift enough or overwhelming enough force to overwhelm someone quickly enough to stop them from harming you. You would be putting yourself in danger to save someone worthless.

Somehow I think it would be easier to give out a gun at a church raffle than martial arts skill. That's not something you can just offer at a prize at a church rally unless it was a gift card to a dojo or something, but that would be a lamer prize than a gun anyway...

I don't know... if we go the direction of giving away karate lessons we risk an increase in the rate of drive-by judo choppings.

Both Lincoln & Jefferson Davis were born in Western KY. Kentucky was neutral during the war. Equal numbers of Whites signed up to fight on each side, the 20,000 Black Union soldiers shifting the total troop balance to the Union.
