Guns and Caffein
Visagrunt, not everyone is going to be comfortable with everything. There are no guarantees in life.
Monday through Friday I drive 50 miles round trip to work and I accept the possibility that I might not live to see the end of each leg of that trip on account of things that can happen en route. Things like distracted drivers running red lights, senile old people driving in the wrong direction, bad weather, etc……… Somehow licensing, training, testing, and law enforcement presence doesn't stop this from happening.
I wear my seatbelts and trust that my air bags deploy and I deal with the risks because the risks will always be there.
Few states allow carrying of firearms on ones person in public without a permit.
Again, that permit is only to protect life and limb and not to enforce the law.
In my state those permits require proof of training, fingerprints, a background check, a notarized application, and money.
They must be renewed periodically.
It’s not a free ride.
Most all states allow only for concealed carry. Unnecessary (unlawful) brandishing of a firearm is grounds for having that permit quickly revoked!
An argument could easily be made on constitutional grounds that this licensing is an infringement on the 2nd but we typically just live with it to appease the hand wringers.
There’s only so far we’re willing to go to appease hand wringers, though, and to say that we’ve already gone far enough is an understatement.
In a nutshell, learn to live with the risks of human existence, deal with the threats that can be dealt with, and don’t look for government to have a solution and law for everything because it’s not practical, possible, and it’s especially not legal.
This is pretty much the essence of the Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness thing we discussed over on the government healthcare thread.
You and I are not so very far apart, Raptor, once the rhetorical absolutism comes down.
Probably a good thing for all participants in the discussion to remember--the more you ramp up the rhetoric, the more you entrench your opponent's position. My preferred approach is to find the grounds for consensus. But in the age of Fox News and Vanity Fair I feel a bit like a voice in the wilderness.

Sound advice. We are governed by people who are, for the most part, either knaves or people who are not competent enough to earn an honest living.
