On one hand it seemed a little odd, for an astronomer (a scientist) to come up with a theory like that, if he first would have to assume that the story stated in the Bible actually happened, in order to make the calculation.
On the other hand, one can assume that the astronomer might not actually believe it, but could see the possibility of the conjunction happening that could lead to people at the time to relate that to the story of Christ, if it happened around that time.
There is the issue related to the Wise men story, it has been stated by some scholars that the story probably should be considered apocryphal, along with the infanticide massacre, considering that the gospel of Luke doesn't mention any of this for example.
