...a simple reminder, for both BB and for others (myself included): one's personal experience does not make something fact. Some people are unable to handle any sort of self management, can become dependent on near anything - and others experience relative minor effects. Just a thought.

It seems several people have proposed this idea.
I just don't think that with society in the state it is in, having more people frying their brains with dope is going to be a good thing. There are already enough people out there whose brains have been fried by TV. I don't wholly buy into this libertarian idea that nothing a person does short of physically attacking people or burgling people's property is anyone else's concern.
Not that I'm wholly opposed to psychotropic drugs.
I mean, Francis Crick was supposedly high on LSD when he discovered the structure of DNA.
As for marijuana, I'm not sure what it's ever given us beyond lots of (mostly overrated) pop music.

How did it do that?

First mechanism that comes to mind: keeping the downtrodden and unemployed masses content. Mwahahaha.

simple equation...

Marja + Legality = Economic boost + Massive spike in crime

So your gonna mess us up either way...

For there has got to be another way to help the economy but still regulate crime......

I vote Nay! :shameonyou:

Why would legalizing Mary J cause a massive spike in crime? Are there going to be bands of looting stoners? How many murders are committed by pot heads? What if instead we look at the cost of illegal drugs: people imprisoned (that costs mad cash), lives ruined, not to mention the fact that the illegal drug trade accounts for much of the revenue of gangs who, it should be noted, contribute to the ridiculously high murder rates in some of America's cities. I mean, does the Amsterdam have a huge crime problem from it?

Let's not forget too that the plant has uses outside of the drug that are not exactly thriving under current laws.

Yeah, just cause the other drugs are bad doesn't make pot good. And it changes people. Ok ive seen friends of mine steal off other friends, I know its not murder, but still.

A lot of the damage that drugs do has little to do with the drugs and a lot to do with the fact that they're illegal.

Not true if you actuly LOOKED at the studies you would find that any kind of drug (leagal or otherwise) has a lasting effect on the body... now marijuana has been classified as a realy bad substance so theres a regulation on it.... Which means if not crime the overall health of the country would be obliterated, meaning less workers and then woooopie freakin do!! !! the economy sucks again... :x

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that somebody wrecking their own body (as happens routinely with alcohol and tobacco) is not as significant as the economic impact of huge numbers of unemployable people with the costly upkeep of having to jail some of them (world's largest prison population per capita and otherwise, right here, God bless America). Throw in illegal drugs in general, and you have the revenue stream for gangs (do I need to dredge up the figures? The city I go to school in has about 35 murders per 100,000 people annually. That kind of murder rate I don't think can be accounted for by demographics alone, although admittedly I haven't researched it, but a comparable city not far from it ranks with like a fifth that).

 Twoshots has a good argument.

So, let's hear the argument for drinking - which is legal - and according to the logic, safe.

How is drinking better than smoking pot? Discuss and try not to veer from the question.

In my experience... drinking IS worse than smoking pot. I've seen countless drunks start fights, fall through glass doors, get belligerent or cause mischief; those who smoke, for the most part, sleep on the couch and leave crumbs. I'm not suggesting anyone drive intoxicated, or otherwise put themselves and others at risk, period. But given the social behaviors of the two, I'm leaning towards the potheads. In terms of health risks, it does pose some physiological and psychological dangers... to those susceptible, it can create paranoia and a sense of being unwell, and in some individuals it may make them vulnerable to certain mental conditions later in life; the inhalation of smoke is the most dangerous part of the process - when vaporized or consumed in edible form, these dangers are erased. It is less likely to cause dependence than either nicotine or alcohol, and is damn near impossible to overdose on. There are risks to the liver, gastric system, nervous system and brain, cardiovascular function and kidneys from alcohol consumption. *shudder* I drank when I was younger, but nowadays it's a social beer or a good glass of scotch if I'm going to put myself through the challenge of drinking anymore.
