Another story of a gun used defensively. No death involved!

Four years ago, Collin was attacked while driving his cab and was stabbed 13 times. From that he learned two lessons: to register and carry a gun, and to respect its power.
As Collin was backing away from the ice pick, he pulled out the gun, then took a deep breath.
"I was like, 'Look, don't come any further. Don't make me do this. I don't want to have to hurt you,'" Collin said.
He said his goal was to stay calm and put some distance between them.
It worked. She paused and he jumped into his taxi and drove away.

Perhaps he would have been better off without a gun. After all, how much damage can an icepick do?

I don't know (such a small hole after all). But I just might know someone who does.

Many years ago Charles Manson was being interviewed on a late night talk show. The righteous host (can't remember his name now) got into an argument with Manson and Manson said the host should be careful because he (Manson) had friends that lived in Manhattan. The host replied "Well I have friends in Manhattan too." To which Manson replied: "My friends have ice picks." End of conversation. Such a teeny tiny hole after all....nothing to worry about really.

Ive got a couple of those old school ice picks. They hail from the day when you bough ice by the block.Wood with the name of the ice house on it.They look pretty formidable. Its not just one hole, but the fact of how easy it would be to make multiple ones quickly.
By the way,NOT a friend of Charles.

As an outsider I am fascinated with how the carrying of loaded weapons is so normalised in US society...the statistics I quoted give some insight into how conservative Americans think.

And no I didn't say "all are racist" just the 65% who agreed with the acquittal...

To me Zimmerman appeared more menacing looking than Trayvon. He would have made me nervous if he was following me.I wasn't happy with the verdict,I know he didn't set out to kill a child that evening, but he was reckless and should have been charged with manslaughter.

Back in the 30s, there was a mob hitman who went by the name of Pittsburgh Phil (not from Pittsburgh, not named Phil) who was quite renowned for his prowess with an icepick, being able to stab his victims so precisely through the ear into the brain that the forensics of the time often put the deaths down to embolisms. He went to the chair after being betrayed by an informant on a single murder charge, but the rumors said that he might have done several hundred hits for Murder Inc before he got ratted out.

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner! Another winner for saying the word "racist"! Let's see if you can do 5 posts without a derogatory comment. Bet you won't even make it to 3! Kraichgauer might have you beat! (We know how much his mouth needs to be cleaned out with soap, toothpaste, shampoo, a little laundry detergent, peroxide, alcohol, maybe a lot of bleach and that's just for starters!)

That's very interesting, Mr. D.! You are a wealth of information! That would make a great bedtime story.

The acquittal was testimony and evidence based as it should always be. Does it mean Zimmerman didn't do what he was charged with? No, it simply means the state couldn't put together a convincing enough case and the jury did the only thing it could do. For that reason alone I agreed with the acquittal and I could care less if that makes me a racist in your eyes.

The way the press was trying to fan the flames of unrest after the trial we're lucky there wasn't a lot more killing as a result.

Yes I accept the prosecution probably weren't able to make a convincing enough case. I also think the judge and jury weren't exactly bending over backwards to take into consideration Zimmerman's past history or his links to dubious groups

My fear is that something will happen that may or may not require the use of deadly force, but some hero will pull a gun and I or some other bystander will get shot because the hero does not have enough training to know what he/she is doing.

Missing the target or shooting through a wall.

^ i worry about that as well. i wouldn't even put it past police, 100% of the time.

to the head? i'd assume, depending on placement, a lot more damage if you're a child than if you're an adult, at which point your cranial sutures have completely ossified. a skull is not one single bone.

not that the difference is very important. consider the tapering, pointed shape of an icepick, and couple it with a strong enough force/velocity and effective placement and angle. you'd have a mess. death probably isn't out of the ballpark.

(still, it's probably much more straightforward, through the ear, than attempting to crack the cranium. and an icepick with an axelike handle/curved blade is a different story than a smaller one used with a single hand and a awl point)

Which happens how often? Seriously, look it up, you have a much better chance of being unintentionally shot by the police than you do by a licensed carrier, especially seeing how the police are personally insulated from the results of a bad shoot, while a civilian carrier has to worry about the full force of the law. You really should look this stuff up before posting, it would save you some embarrassment.
