The capital of the United States WAS New York at the very beginning of the Constitutional Era (1789).

There's no way the capital will ever be moved to New York City. The District of Columbia was created specifically to host the capital.

Rather like Canberra was created specifically to become the capital of Australia.

It's not just about Trump, even senior members of the republicans have voiced their concern over the international risks to bilateral and multilateral relations for the US. Where exactly is it advantageous for American interests??

Trump is too scatter brained to understand America's interests. His only concern is keeping a campaign promise to his fundie and holy roller supporters so as to keep their votes next election.

His main concern is grabbing his ankles for Israel. Pretty much like every guy before him.

Wait a minute... weren't head-over-heels in love with Trump just the other day?

Life's too short to keep explaining myself to you.

My response had actually been rhetorical, but that's your choice.

 Silly.

Now that's just cruel...starving and abused kids in the third world should not be collateral damage for politics. While Trump's lack of empathy for the poor is well known I don't understand why Nikki Haley (who despite her name is south Asian herself) should be party to this. She should hang her head in shame.

But you just supported 'collateral damage' on another thread. Enough with the moral outrage.

Haley, while governor, had fought to keep organized labor out of her state, even though she knew this would mean higher wages, benefits, more buying power, and generally better life for millions of her constituents. But she instead decided to follow the lead of her state's business interests rather than struggling people. Trust me, she has no heart.

These UN agencies are quite corrupt but the optics are terrible and children will be hurt because even through the corruption some money trickles down. Speaking of corruption like with the Paris climate change agreement I would not be surprised if Trump uses the vote to kick the UN out and use the expensive Manhattan real estate to build a Trump extravaganza.

No that's why I thought he might be not just suring up his conservative electoral support but also clawing back aid money in a sneaky move

The Dominion is the main newspaper in Wellington, our capital and seat of government. It is also a very conservative newpaper, respected for its measured tones. It was with very much surprise that I read its editorial on this matter, "We will remember too, America". The right wing newspapers here have reacted more strongly about the "taking names" shameful behaviour:

Thank you for the link. Whatever the version of "Hear, hear!" is that applies to the written word, I'm saying it.

In announcing the cut, Ambassador Nikki Haley blamed the world body for its budgetary excesses without making a specific reference to last week's vote on President Donald Trump's controversial Jerusalem decision. It is unclear if all of the budget savings will come from a reduction in the U.S. contribution to the U.N.'s overall $5.4-billion biennial budget, but Haley's statement did not mention any other member states.

“The inefficiency and overspending of the United Nations are well known. We will no longer let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain unchecked,” Haley said. “This historic reduction in spending—in addition to many other moves toward a more efficient and accountable U.N.—is a big step in the right direction.”

Haley said there might be further budget cuts in the future. President Trump's proposed 2018 spending budget would end funding for U.N. climate change programs and would cut funding to the United Nations Children’s Fund, also known as UNICEF, by 16 percent.

Good move
I'd cut even more and ultimately get the US out of the UN and the UN out of the US.

With diplomatic immunity these people get away with all sorts things and at worst get sent back home.

Why dirty diplomats can literally get away with murder
Quote:
It’s a sleazy scenario that plays out in bars and clubs across the Big Apple: Everybody’s having a great time until some creep just can’t keep his hands to himself.

But early Sunday at Bar None — a Third Avenue dive in the East Village where NYU co-eds squeeze in every weekend to chug cheap Bud and dance to ’90s rock — one of these guys would finally face the consequences.

A creep put his paws all over an unwitting young woman’s boobs and backside, she said, and the victim immediately reported the sleazy moves to a bouncer.

From there, the bar did everything right — calling the police and holding the suspect in place. He even tried to run when the cops showed up.

For any other perp, that would have led to an arrest and up to a year in prison. But Hassan Salih, 36, had the ultimate free pass: diplomatic immunity. So the mid-level Sudanese attaché escaped with no charges, no court date and no consequences.

“Everyone is infuriated,” fumed a Bar None bartender. “How is it this guy gets a ‘Get out of jail free’ card?”

Salih is hardly alone. He is the latest in a long line of diplomats in New York to use the privilege to get out of serious trouble, including wife-beating and even injuring cops.

he rule, part of an international treaty dating to the 1960s, means diplomats can’t be arrested or sued in their host country — no matter what they do. “They can literally get away with murder,” said Peter Spiro, a professor of international law at Temple.

Even if a diplomat stands in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoots somebody, the cops can’t charge them, he said. The most the United States can do is ask their home country to waive immunity — which almost never transpires — or kick them out, which the feds aren’t always willing to do, according to a former city attorney.

n January, another accused Sudanese sleazebag, Abdalla Ali, was busted allegedly grinding his crotch on a woman on a 4 train — in full view of transit cops — but faced zero consequences.

Perhaps most notoriously, German Joachim Haubrichs got away with allegedly punching his wife in October 2016.

His spouse, Henna Johnson, spoke openly with The Post about his allegedly violent and controlling ways at the time — she said he became enraged because she was speaking on the phone after 7:30 p.m. and he enforced a strict bedtime.

Neighbors said it was a regular occurrence.

“He hits her real hard. He’s broken a bunch of her bones in her face. He only hits her in the face. Black eyes. I’ve seen a million of them,” said a resident of their Upper East Side building.

But police couldn’t even remove Haubrichs from the home — they advised Johnson to go to a domestic-violence shelter.

ops can’t even do anything when they’re the victims — as when blind-drunk Zambian government official Langford Banda crashed his car into an NYPD van in 2015, injuring two officers.

“He was a total mess,” a law enforcement source told The Post at the time. “He got off because he’s a diplomat. Not our choice.”

It can be very “frustrating” for the arresting officers, says Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD sergeant and adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

“The procedure is: As soon as diplomatic identity is proven, police have to let them go,” Giacalone said.

“Sometimes, it’s all done within 15 to 20 minutes.”

mmunity also means the city is powerless to make diplomats pay parking tickets, which has allowed them to rack up more than $16 million in unpaid fines since the 1990s.

Egyptian envoys are the worst offenders by a large margin — with almost $2 million in debts — followed by Nigeria, Indonesia and Brazil, according to a 2015 analysis.
Modal Trigger
Joachim Haubrichs, accused of beating his wife, Henna Johnson

One Egyptian car alone amassed more than $223,000 from almost 2,000 unpaid tickets between 1997 and 2015.

The rogue parking dropped off heavily after 2002, when the State Department started refusing to reregister cars with large outstanding ticket debts — but most countries still haven’t paid their fines.

Diplomatic immunity cuts both ways, and it has also spared plenty of Americans from the slammer while abroad.

It’s rare for US diplomats to be busted groping strangers or beating their wives, Spiro says, but they could otherwise face all sorts of trumped-up charges from foreign governments.

“Diplomatic immunity disables states from framing diplomats,” Spiro said.

Foreign officials caught behaving badly in the States are also often whisked back to their home countries to avoid embarrassment, police sources told The Post.

And governments sometimes work with local officials behind the scenes, according to Wayner — in cases of child abuse, they have refrained from insisting that Children’s Services hand kids back.

Still, it’s hard to keep the big picture in mind when you’re fighting crime.

It is a prime terrorist target because not only because of people who have a beef with America but anybody who has a beef with any member country. The taxpayers have to pay to protect these "diplomats".

There are a lot of ways that property can be better used for New Yorkers.

I recall how years ago, a Russian diplomat had killed someone in a drunk driving accident, then left the scene. To his credit, then Russian President, Boris Yeltsin, revoked the guys status so he could be arrested by American police.

Yeltsin was an entertaining leader. didn't do that much for Russia, however. anyways, I thought the whole purpose of the UN was as an intervening force to try to prevent another world war, what would happen if we gave it the boot? I suspect it would be better to have it here than elsewhere, in terms of JFK's warning, "keep your friends close, but your enemies closer."
