Just now learned on the Net that William Boeing, founder of the company in the WWI era, was the son of German immigrants named "Boing". Except that the "o" in the original German name had an umlaut over it...that pair of dots they use in German that I cant type. Which indicates that it was pronounced with a double vowel sound (probably sounded more like 'boeing' than like 'boing').

Lyrics: Allentown

And we're living here in Allentown
But the restlessness was handed down
And it's getting very hard to stay

So the graduations hang on the wall
But they never really helped us at all
No they never taught us what was real
Iron and coke, chromium steel

And we're waiting here in Allentown
But they've taken all the coal from the ground
And the union people crawled away

[ context: The Bladerunner (also published as The Blade Runner) is a 1974 science fiction novel by Alan E. Nourse ]

https://bladerunner.fandom.com/wiki/Off-world_colonies

Beginning with the Earth's moon and Mars, the colonies began to be settled in the 1990s and employed the use of slave labor by replicants.[1]

In 2018, a Nexus-6 replicant combat team staged an uprising, prompting the ban of replicants from Earth.[2]

McCoy dream
Ray McCoy's dream of a colony

By late 2019, the Dominguez and Shimata colonies had been settled[3] and humans on Earth were encouraged to emigrate to the colonies; this was promoted aggressively with advertising from the Shimago-Dominguez Corporation extolling the adventure and opportunities awaiting them if they left Earth, as well as promises of financial and personal incentives; for example, all colonists were promised a free replicant for their personal use.[4] The Planetary Development Organization continued such advertisements as late as 2032.[5]

Ana Stelline's adoptive parents moved Off-world, leaving her behind due to her "compromised immune system."[6]

By mid-2049, nine additional Off-world colonies existed, which frustrated Niander Wallace, given that he wished to see humanity rapidly expand across the stars.[6]

Behind the scenes
The concept of Off-world colonies is based on the colonization program mentioned in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, where humans have settled other planets, such as Mars.

The actual conditions on these colonies are never shown in the films, but the setting hints that the situation Off-world is not as rosy as the advertisements claim. The replicants are designed to survive dangerous harsh labor and environments. Roy was designed specifically for use as a soldier, recalling the battles he fought Off-world, and it appears that Leon and Zhora also had considerable combat training. Zhora was described as having been a member of a kick-murder-squad. Finally, there is the intensity of the marketing campaign itself; although the Los Angeles of 2019 is a miserable dystopia, its population still apparently requires aggressive promotion and considerable financial incentives to leave for these supposed paradises.

A deleted scene notes that Rick Deckard's ex-wife left him for a man Off-world. A draft of the script dated February 23, 1981 also mentions the Dominguez-Shimata Colony. The novelization mentions Dominguez and Shimata as separate colonies.

It is never specified as to if the Off-World society is limited to interplanetary (within our solar system) or had any interstellar presence. Roy Batty's speech includes a reference to "attack ships on fire off the Shoulder of Orion." Also, Harry Bryant, when discussing Leon Kowalski with Deckard mentions Leon being "an ammunition loader on intergalactic runs." The suggestion of intergalactic travel seems incongruous with the future society of Blade Runner as that would make them far more advanced than other future science fiction universes such as Star Trek where even practical warp travel is still limited to a small slice of the galaxy and is not instantaneous. This use of the word "intergalactic" may be a script oversight. Niander Wallace's words about wishing to see mankind reach the stars heavily suggest that there is no interstellar travel yet. The 1998 film Soldier, however, does refer to the Tannhäuser Gate as a kind of warp portal or stargate, which hypothetically would allow for interstellar travel.

^ a more positive take . . .

https://asimov.fandom.com/wiki/Spacers

Spacers are the group of modified humans descended from the first wave of colonists, which started to leave Earth in 2065. The term Spacer is very general and is primarily used by the people of Earth in a derogatory manner. Spacers prefer to refer to themselves by their planet of origin; that is, Auroran, Solarian, etc.

Each planet has a different culture; in some cases, the cultures are radically different. There are only a few traits that Spacers share in common. First, they have decidedly more advanced technology than available on Earth. Second, they use robots to an incredible extent, due to the low population on their worlds. Third, their lifespans are much longer than those of Earthpeople or Settlers. Fourth, Spacers have exceedingly weak immune systems, since there are no pathogens on their planets.

The New World Economy
In the late 22nd century, the formation of the New World Economy on Earth led to the disappearance of money in the traditional sense on the planet. 23rd and 24th century Humans regularly referred to their species having developed a philosophy without the need for accumulation of wealth, instead focusing on self-enhancement and advancement of the Human race. (VOY: "Dark Frontier"; DS9: "In the Cards"; Star Trek: First Contact)

During an excursion to 1986-era San Francisco, James T. Kirk told Spock about 20th century Earth, saying, "They're still using money. We need to get some." He then pawned eyeglasses that Leonard McCoy had given him for $100, which he doled out among his crew with an admonishment not to splurge (spend it recklessly). Later on, while Kirk was having dinner with Gillian Taylor in a restaurant and was unable to pay there, Gillian asked sarcastically, "don't tell me they don't use money in the 23rd century," and Kirk earnestly replied, "well, we don't." (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

In 2364, Jean-Luc Picard tried to explain to Ralph Offenhouse, a financier from the 20th century, that there would be no need for his services any longer. "A lot has changed in three hundred years," said Picard. "People are no longer obsessed with the accumulation of "things." We have eliminated hunger, want, the need for possessions." (TNG: "The Neutral Zone")

When Lily Sloane asked Picard how much the USS Enterprise-E had cost to build, he told her, "the economics of the future is somewhat different. You see, money doesn't exist in the 24th century... The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in our lives. We work to better ourselves and the rest of Humanity." (Star Trek: First Contact)

The Lunar colonies on Earth's moon Luna were, along with Utopia Planitia on Mars and a few asteroid colonies, the first attempts by Humans at colonizing space. One of the earliest settlements, New Berlin, was built between 2063 and 2069. (ENT: "Terra Nova"; Star Trek: First Contact)

Star Trek: Star Charts placed the founding of the first Lunar Colony in 2039. (p. 32)

In the mirror universe the Lunar colonies were bombarded by an Emmette-type starship sometime before the NX-class of starships came into use. (Opening credits, ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly", "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II")

The Lunar colonies were also prominently featured in the opening credits of Star Trek: Enterprise.

In the 22nd century, Lunar One Colony was the largest of all Lunar colonies. The Orpheus Mining Complex was another settlement on Luna during the 22nd century. (ENT: "Zero Hour", "Demons")

By 2373, the population was approximately fifty million. (Star Trek: First Contact)

Among the Humans born on the Lunar colonies were Beverly Crusher and Dorian Collins. (TNG: "Conundrum"; DS9: "Valiant"). People born or living on the Lunar colonies were often called Lunar schooners by Earth-based Humans. (DS9: "Valiant")

https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Martian_colonies

The Martian colonies were one of the oldest colonies of Humankind. (e.g., TOS: "Court Martial"; DS9: "In the Cards"; VOY: "The 37's")

Having been completed in 2012, the Millennium Gate on Earth served as a model for the first colony on the red planet. It pioneered many new technologies and scientific principles like a coverage by highly-reflective solar panels and being constructed as a self-contained biosphere. (VOY: "11:59")

The Martian colonies were established in 2103, although settlements on Mars had already existed by 2069. (ENT: "Terra Nova"; VOY: "The 37's") Among the pioneers who settled the first colony were some of Jean-Luc Picard's ancestors. (Star Trek Generations) The Fundamental Declarations of the Martian colonies were an important step in the pursuit of individual rights. (TOS: "Court Martial") The flag of the first of the Martian colonies was inspired by a velvet painting of a matador, according to Quark. (DS9: "In the Cards")

It remains unclear whether the Fundamental Declarations were passed along with the establishment of the Martian colonies in 2103.

In 2105, Redjac, an entity feeding off pain and fear, killed eight women of the Martian colonies. (TOS: "Wolf in the Fold")

In an alternate timeline, the Martian colonies were destroyed in a 2154 Xindi attack. (ENT: "Twilight")

In 2155, when a xenophobic faction of Humans known as Terra Prime took over the verteron array, Starfleet intended to destroy the array rather than let the terrorist organization carry out their attack on San Francisco. Destroying the array threatened to destroy a portion of Utopia Colony, an indication that the two were in close proximity to one another. The colony had at least one hospital as of 2155. (ENT: "Demons", "Terra Prime")

Known citizens include Lieutenant Mira Romaine, a crewmember of the USS Enterprise who was born at Martian Colony 3, and Simon Tarses and his brother, the former a crewmember of the USS Enterprise-D. (TOS: "The Lights of Zetar"; TNG: "The Drumhead")

Love he idea of being a space fairing species but hate the idea that we may export our brand of humanity
Into the rest of the galaxy.....

Airlines are about the only manufactured product that America exports anymore. And Boeing is the last American company standing in that . If Boeing goes then...thats it. We will have to depend upon soybeans and Taylor Swift.

"In the future, astronauts could be sent on yearslong missions to the moon and Mars. But living in space that long poses all kinds of physical and physiological challenges. So, NASA is trying to learn as much as it can from astronauts who've spent the most time in space.

Science correspondent Miles O'Brien spoke with the American who has set the record for longest single space mission."

What happened to Sunita Williams's spacecraft?
Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore had launched aboard Boeing's new Starliner capsule on June 5. They would have been back weeks ago, most probably by June 14. However, they are still in hovering space after their Starliner spacecraft experienced trouble in the propulsion system – which is used to manoeuvre the spacecraft.

“Helium leaks and thruster failures almost derailed their arrival at the International Space Station, and has kept them there much longer than planned," officials said.

When will NASA astronauts return to Earth?
Now, all eyes are on the return of Starliner crew members – Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore – back to Earth. In an update on July 10, NASA's commercial crew program director Steve Stich had said the earliest the duo could return to Earth may be by the end of July.

No exact date of return was provided by the NASA officials. Boeing's Mark Nappi earlier stressed that in an emergency, Starliner and its crew could return right now. While the company does not believe the thrusters are damaged, “we want to fill in the blanks and run this test to assure ourselves of that," he said.

Since their docking at the International Space Station, the Starliner crew members have been engaged in a series of research and experiments, and understanding exactly what went wrong during their journey on the Starliner capsule.

( Safely)?

Elon to rescue ULA’a astronauts:

https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/nasa- ... hout-crew/

NASA will return Boeing’s Starliner to Earth without astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams aboard the spacecraft, the agency announced Saturday. The uncrewed return allows NASA and Boeing to continue gathering testing data on Starliner during its upcoming flight home, while also not accepting more risk than necessary for its crew.

Wilmore and Williams, who flew to the International Space Station in June aboard NASA’s Boeing Crew Flight Test, have been busy supporting station research, maintenance, and Starliner system testing and data analysis, among other activities.

“Spaceflight is risky, even at its safest and most routine. A test flight, by nature, is neither safe, nor routine. The decision to keep Butch and Suni aboard the International Space Station and bring Boeing’s Starliner home uncrewed is the result of our commitment to safety: our core value and our North Star,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “I’m grateful to both the NASA and Boeing teams for all their incredible and detailed work.”

Wilmore and Williams will continue their work formally as part of the Expedition 71/72 crew through February 2025. They will fly home aboard a Dragon spacecraft with two other crew members assigned to the agency’s SpaceX Crew-9 mission. Starliner is expected to depart from the space station and make a safe, controlled autonomous re-entry and landing in early September.

i hope their bodies can withstand the conditions up there for that long.
