Same here but somehow I've controlled it and at age 53 I don't have a criminal record.

I have a criminal record

I just feel like how can you fully take responsibility for what you've done if no one knows it's you that's done it. I've never killed a person but I've done some pretty f****d up things to people and property when I was in my younger days. I've probably ruined people's lives

Maybe I'm right or maybe I'm wrong but I can't get past that

I think you just have to learn from your mistakes.

I've been around long enough to know that I'm in a vanishingly small minority here but I can't help also having empathy for this very young guy who is clearly deeply mentally disturbed and has just destroyed his own life as well as the lives of many others.

Something happened in his brain that said this was the right thing to do, whether that was some sort of biological malfunction or a product of environmental factors. To me that's just another tragic part of this entire miserable business.

I agree with you. It’s tragic all around. Someone dropped the ball on that kid when he likely needed mental health support. We have no idea if he’s on drugs or what conditions he might have. I feel for his parents too, assuming they’re regular citizens whose lives are changed irrevocably.

None of that means this isn’t a grotesque tragedy or that I’m not shattered for the victims first and foremost.

This is where empathy and sympathy are two very different things

I can have empathy for him but I can't sympathise with him...no one jot

And my name and personality disorder has been broadcast in the newspaper as well and I don't think it did me any harm

If anything it helped me see the error of my ways more

I'm sorry I made that post. It wasn't the time or the place. I apologise to anyone who felt judged or high-roaded by me, particularly Rossall who I quoted.

It was a good point you made

I can't see why you should feel the need to apologise but since you did; apology accepted

that's not why they released his name/details. How is this different from thomas Crooks? we knew his name within 24hrs

It seems to me that it's one story for white people to do it in other countries but it's a different story when a brown person does it in England .

Media companies peddle sensationalist stories, they have in the past, do it now and always will. We have a free press and the same people who say we should regulate how stories are reported (interfere in editorial freedom) would ironically be against government interference and reducing freedom of press.

the issue of whether news should identify specific details of a perpetrator (thomas Crooks or Axel Rudakubana) is irrelevant because the public want to know and news services what the public want.

According to the judge

“While I accept it is exceptional given his age, principally because he is 18 in six days’ time I do not make an order (to suppress the suspect’s identity).”

As soon as he turned 18, he would have been able to be identified.

“Continuing to prevent full reporting at this stage has the disadvantage of allowing others who are up to mischief to continue to spread misinformation in a vacuum and runs the risk that when the information becomes publicly available in six days’ time that will provide an additional excuse for a fresh round of public disorder.

“Allowing full reporting will undoubtedly remove some of the misreporting as to the identity of the defendant,” said Judge Menary.

I find this all very sad.
The speculation has been through the roof in the last few days.
Mental health services for young people are ridiculous in this county - a poor response from our government for many years.
No doubt social media has played its part before and after this event and others likened to it.
I will wait for more information but I think a lot of us know how this will play out.
Sad to the bone tonight.

I realise the mental health angle has been bought up but there is no evidence (yet) Axel had mental illness prior to this horrible act.

Unfortunately, this is true.
BBC live updates
Quote:
Rudakubana has autism diagnosis, court told
When arguing that the judge should impose reporting restrictions preventing Rudakubana's identification, the prosecution said the suspect had an “autism spectrum disorder diagnosis”, and that he had been “unwilling to leave the house and communicate with family for a period of time”.
