hypocrisy is NOT "a thing" if one also would not go around killing ants and mounting their heads. morally, it is one thing to kill for survival, but quite another to kill gratuitously. "thou shalt not kill" IS "a thing." the people who like killing/collecting animals to use as trophies, and those who find such to be repugnant and backwards, will never agree.

I see killing for zero reason to be worst than killing even for a "bad" reason.

It'd be better to mount ants than to kill them without care; at least they're doing something for someone.

Butterfly collections and whatnot.

For what it's worth, if I see a healthy rattlesnake or other snake on a highway or other roadway, I'll generally stop and chase it off of the road before someone else comes along and runs over it.

There are exceptions to that. If the rattlesnake is real close to a house or work area, I'll go ahead and kill it. I've thought about getting a device for catching snakes so I could just relocate those snakes to somewhere where they will be less likely to harm anyone.

I wouldn't with the road, mainly because it's a good way to get run over, especially on winding country roads where snakes would be common.

No real [practical] need to kill snakes when around houses, though. They'll only bite you if you step on them or try and use a melee weapon and mess up the kill. They're easy to remove from inside houses too.

Plenty of Eastern brown and black snakes around here. But, I don't know about the venomous snakes in the US; they might be more aggressive in regards to going out of their way to attack. The ones around here are generally aloof.

I wouldn't pick up a rattlesnake, but I would attempt to herd it off the road. I've done this with turtles.

I pick up terrapins when they are in roads and put them in my backyard.

I think I've figured out how to make everyone happy.

1) Create GMO cockroaches the size of lions, rhinos, and even elephants.
2) Release them in Africa
3) Sell hunting permits of GMO cockroaches for $50,000 each.
4) Profit.

Surely the animal rights people wouldn't complain about big game hunters killing cockroaches.

There is a downside. I suspect that most big game hunters wouldn't like a wall mount of a cockroach head in their den.

And best news of all - they would never be endangered! Best idea I've read all day!

This satirical comment regarding cockroaches brings up an important point. Every day cows, pigs, chickens are subjected to horrifying treatment in the process of being bred and slaughtered. Does anyone get upset about Carla the Cow, no. We eat her and enjoy it.
And even knowing this about myself and Carla, I still cannot help being bothered by the story of Cecil.
So why? I think it is the lore of lions ... majestic king of beasts. Beaten in an unfair fight. Tricked and hit with a bad shot. The Lion King cut down.
Palmer didn't attack a lion, he attacked myth. And heaven help him now.

I think also Palmer was so proud of himself, yet he was not brave enough to hunt the really wild lions outside the national park/protected area. He took the glory of coming up against a fearsome opponent but the act itself was like killing someone's pet.

They should freeze his assets until this is sorted out legally regarding poaching (which he has done before).

in America at least, rich people like the dentist are hard to punish, the law is in their favor most of the time.

It's amusing, but not really doable. if they didn't collapse under their own weight or die from dehydration, they'd end up eating all the smaller animals as roaches are omnivores.

Well, Thank God Palmer was identified and what happened is out there. It could have been a situation where people just find the remaining carnage and tracking device or just the tracking device and not know what happened.

Lets hope this has made people think of how barbaric this is and there will be and end to trophy hunting.

I see he is still in hiding shows what a coward he is.

R I P Cecil there are some of us who care about wildlife and will keep trying to save animals from these barbarians.
