A news update from the land of banjos and mullets:

http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbc ... ckcomments

A Valley Station Road church (near Louisville) is sponsoring an "Open Carry Church Service" in late June, encouraging people to wear unloaded guns in their holsters, enter a raffle to win a free handgun, hear patriotic music and listen to talks by operators of gun stores and firing ranges.

What a stinking cesspool of moronity! The caliber of their guns is no doubt higher than their IQ.

That's just out and out blasphemy, and I'm not even Christian. Not to mention a violation of the tax-exempt status of religious organizations.

May they be visited by the Holy IRS and Sacred ATF.

I am confused and troubled by this idea. I think the raffle to win a gun is wrong. I am niether 100% progun or antigun. I would say that if a person wants and needs a gun it should be up to them to choose and purchase one, I think that giving a gun as a gift is wrong.

Also guns are not the perfect cure all which some of the pro gun lobby claim that they are.

It's not blasphemy, there is no conflict between Christianity and owning and carrying weapons.

Since we will never get rid of guns entirely, the best alternative is to have guns in the hands of as many responsible citizens as possible. Not to say that these are responsible citizens, but I bet most of them would do fine in a pinch.

I am not from the South. I am not a Christian. I am not a Republican. I am not a hick, redneck, nationalist, or whatever other stereotype you might normally hear this argument from. I am merely a rational person that doesn't rely on emotion to cloud my judgment.

And I hate guns.

Nothing like taking partial quotes literally and out of context...

Just to fill everyone in, that line is part of what Jesus said to his disciples just before his capture by the High Priests and Temple guards. He goes on to say, 'For I say to you that this which is written must yet be fulfilled in me, 'And he is reckoned among the wicked'.'

This passage is interpreted by the Catholic Church (among others) to mean that Jesus was telling his followers that they must be prepared through spiritual weapons to meet all sorts of dangers, trials and hardships.

Then Jesus is betrayed by Judas, and as the soldiers make to seize him, the disciples say, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?" And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. But Jesus answered and said, "Bear with them thus far." And he touched the man's ear and healed him.

And then he surrendered himself into their hands.

So tell me... How many raffle tickets would Jesus buy?

I do not know that Jesus was the Saviour, but he was a great and courageous man. Carrying guns into a sanctuary and refuge purporting to be Christian is blasphemy against the man and his teachings.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people.

If we have a military run by the corrupt government that has arms, citizens should be allowed to bear arms.

I think it's a reaction to the murder of George Tiller in Kansas.

If a gun is a tool and neither good nor evil, it still leaves the fact that they are designed to kill humans and the purpose of a Church is the exact antithesis of that.

Those of you supporting this have simply missed this fundamental or are arguing a different point.

Thats probably not true, but thats the real way things are meant to be taken. These gun happy rednecks just have their own take on what the bible is telling them to do, so they can have an excuse to shoot their guns.

Uh-oh, I'm having an Aspie moment... that's not entirely accurate, VA. Firearms are designed (in large part) to kill. Not just humans.

But your point about the crux of the issue is dead on... (a little sick humor, there)
