Iran Revolution on Twitterfall

I have been watching the second Iranian Revolution of my life (the first was in 1979) over Twitterfall ( http://twitterfall.com ) Watching girls get shot and dying right there on the camera phone, hearing the Basji Revolutionary Guard do home invasions in the dark with women shrieking that even gets through to my guarded emotions. Hearing the call and response from the roofs of apartment houses Allah Akbar! (God is Great) showing solidarity with each other in the terrors in the night.

Anyone else watching history?

Absolutely. I was moved by the calls of Allahu Akbar from the rooftops. An old friend of mine has a father from Iran but I think most of the family either left years before or got out at the 1979 revolution. Watching all of this makes me feel like a coward. I'm not sure I could be as brave as these protesters.

been on the irc channel affiliated to to iran.whyweprotest.net and there were some links to twitter and other articles on fark, digg, slashdot, etc (for the past 5 days)

I have done a bit of street demonstrations in Seattle and San Francisco, Berkeley, too. Courage comes from the solidarity of acting in something that is much bigger than you are. It's not cowardice to realize that as one person you have no voice, but to act to change with your family and friends and neighbors it becomes intoxicating.

The Iranian government is cracking down on Twitter, blogs, and other communications used by citizens. We can help by setting our Twitter account locations and timezones to Tehran, Iran. Doing so will put government censors and thugs on information overload.

Also, regarding the age of the channel? irc is ~20 years old IIRC. Some vids on the soviet break-up and attempted coup was distributed via irc I think.

You haven't done this too much on the net, have you? Yes it's weird and cool to do-being on an irc channel or forum or looking at a twitter feed and helping people coordinate raids, DDoS and being in chat rooms when they try to hack the sites.



You can also install tor and set your computer to act as a Tor Node to allow more people to post on proxies faster. Some other people are doing similar things.

no, I have only done it for real, marching in Berkeley, getting tear gassed, mixing up boric acid solution in sterile canteens to wash it out of eyes, etc. We were closing down highways marching through town. Unpopular jungle war started by ill advised jerks playing big shot, and we got our butts soundly kicked, too. Just wanted my generation out of it. My husband got hit with a 'rubber' bullet that shattered his shoulderblade (yeah, shot by Oakland's Finest in the back). In 1979 Iran had a revolution, too, but no internet.

I wonder why you have to put people down, Warsie? Does it make you feel more important when you belittle their efforts?

I've done IRL protests and marching, organizing too (and helping with writing letters)

9/11 truth groups, general "anti-war" groups, socialist and communist groups, etc. A bunch of us recently protested Karl Rove @ the Chicago Theater...was fun and interesting to absorb the general 'aura' of the people around me.

I managed to avoid the parts where the police crack down on people like that. Worst I had to deal with was this dude who drew a beer bottle at me. Thankfully I was riding a bike and it hit the ground by me. Ended up running over/by it and the smell got on me but yeah. Good thing for cameras-police can't get away with this.

EDIT:. lol. You were involved in the Berkeley stuff/crackdowns when then-california governor Reagan tried to crackdown on that open space and tried to turn it into a parking lot (I presume that's what you're referring to-that was the most major incident between police and protests right? Reagan was angry and used some very strong language re the "hippies" there.

EDIT 2: Yeah. It'd be nice if the American people could repeat that. (the whole 'shutting down major cities' aspect)



Too bad the communists and whatnot were outmaneuvered by the Islamists in that. Wonder how history would've changed in an alternate version with a coalition government of them, or the communists and republicans would establish the government alone, etc
