Quote:
Church fined over £500,000 after case brought by former members who were pressured into handing over money ... The case was brought by two female former members who alleged that they were pressured into paying large sums of money to the church after joining in the 1990s. They also alleged that members of the church had harassed them to buy a variety of products including vitamins and to sign up for "purification" courses costing thousands of euros. One said she had been advised by a financial adviser from the church to take out a large loan to finance her activities within the organisation.

Prosecutors had at one point requested that the group be dissolved in France and be fined €4m. However, last month it was revealed that an obscure modifiction of French law meant that courts no longer have the power to dissolve organisations found guilty of fraud.

So, unfortunately the cult has not been dissolved and is free to con more people.

It's been on and on and on for many many years.
It's not the first time that happens.

They always find a way, always, in each and every trial they've been on. in. well, I don't know how to say it.
But they always find a way to escape.

You wouldn't believe what happened sometimes!

It either is or is among the top financial cults. No matter what happens, they can get money when/however they choose. Short of governments issuing a war on cults, i doubt we'll be rid of this group, and many others, for a long long long long long . . . time.

When a group has a global reputation as a cult and a proven history of fraud and extortion, one wonders what kind of gullible dupe a person would have to be to get involved with them at all. Yet people still do.

I read Dianetics once just to see what all the brouhaha was about. L Ron Hubbard was a moron. His wild postulations made absolutely no coherent sense - the very definition of 'irrational' - and I normally love a good wild tangent theory.

It always disappoints me to see a celebrity whom I otherwise respect admit to being a Scientologist. It forces me to reassess my estimation of their IQ considerably.

I agree. I've never been able to see John Travolta / Tom Cruise films in quite the same light since. Some kids may see them as a sort of role model ... it also lends credibility to Scientologist propaganda.

I really dislike Scientology. I was at a new age/spirituality faire and they were there. They didn't say they were Scientologists on their sign but they said it to people. I would hazard a guess that some of their victums come from places like that.

I have an interest in new age stuff and I know that there was a stage where I was very gulible when I became interested in this kind of thing. I don't think I'm unique in being gulible at that time. I read articles about former members, nasty stuff happened to them (emotional and legal nastyness).

Though, they (current members) probably say all the stuff that their lawyers said in the article, and sound genuine because some of them really believe what they say, and get members that way.

Sorry if I was ranting there, I really don't like cults, and what they do to people, and the con jobs that they do.

I'll just clarify something here - "purification courses" means "Purification rundown". See, to them, Psychiatry is the successor to Nazism. That's why they will not allow any time of medication for mental ailments, but instead replace the whole thing with what is basically a case of vitamin overdosing. They use this at their phony drug rehabilitation centers, known as "Narconon", too. Here's the thing: Hubbard "discovered" that drugs attach to body fat, so the solution to drug addicts is to put them in a sauna 4 hours a day to "sweat" out the drugs, along with overdosing on vitamins on the side, and doing Scientology on the side. Going through withdrawals in a sauna must be nice...

I heard someone say that when you hand your information over to them when you join it goes into a big database. And that if you decide to leave they use the information they got on you when you joined against you.

How do they keep escaping?

One of the ways can be blackmail.
You only need names and addresses for this one.
And if you have more informations, it's even easier.

Combined with harrassement and threats on someone who's had already been weakened by all possible means for months and years and maybe decades, one can imagine how difficult it is to cut with them.

They're smart, don't underestimate them.

You don't even have to give them your info, this is why people wear masks at protests. They will actively try to ruin your life if you actively disagree with them.

My uncle used to be a scientologist (don't know if he went back) and he tried to leave. He had just split up with my ex aunty (also a scientologist) and so the scientologists threatened him about the whole custody thing. Trust me, they've got a lot of lawyers. My cousin is mixed race and her mother wanted to take her permanantly to Israel. She and the lawyers made up fake allegations that he was a child abuser which is stupid because he isn't that sort of person at all. He used to look after me and my little bro as kids and he never laid a finger on us. I hate cults, they drag really vulnerable people in with their 'we can help you' s**t. :x

This is true. When the protests were announced here in Denmark, the organizer had a private detective come to their home with a phony cease and desist letter. Police had shared the contact info with Scientology... That's our police in a nutshell!

Did anyone see that episode of South Park called Tom Cruise won't come out of the closet?

I hope Anonymous and their bunch can find enough info to put them out of business forever.

And a fervent wish: that Travolta will man up and disavow them over the trouble with his kid who died. Personally Cruise would be a bigger headline but he's also a bigger fool so that ain't gonna happen.
