Taser gun used on 10-year-old girl who 'refused to take shower'

The officer had been called to the girl's home in Ozark, Arkansas, by her mother because she was behaving in an unruly manner and refusing to take a shower.

In a report on the incident the officer, Dustin Bradshaw, said the mother gave him permission to use the Taser.

When he arrived, the girl was curled up on the floor, screaming, and resisting as her mother tried to get her in the shower before bed.

"Her mother told me to take her if I needed to," the officer wrote.

The child was "violently kicking and verbally combative" when he tried to take her into custody and she kicked him in the groin.

He then delivered "a very brief drive stun to her back," the report said.

The girl's father, Anthony Medlock, who is divorced from her mother, said the girl showed signs of emotional problems but did not deserve to be "treated like an animal".

He said: "Ten years old and they shot electricity through her body, and I want to know how the heck in God's green earth can they get away with this.

"If you can't pick the kid up and take her to your car, handcuff her, then I don't think you need to be an officer. She doesn't deserve to be treated like a dog. She's not a tiger." Local Mayor Vernon McDaniel said the FBI should investigate.

He said: "People here feel like that he made a mistake in using a Taser, and maybe he did, but we will not know until we get an impartial investigation." The local Police Chief Jim Noggle said no disciplinary action was taken against Bradshaw.

"We didn't use the Taser to punish the child, just to bring the child under control so she wouldn't hurt herself or somebody else," he said.

He said if the officer tried to forcefully put the girl in handcuffs, he could have accidentally broken her arm or leg.

Mr Noggle said the girl will face disorderly conduct charges as a juvenile.

Someday I'd like to see someone challenge the 'disorderly conduct' statutes as unconstitutionally vague... it seems to be a catch-all charge to be used whenever a person's behavior does not violate the law, but that someone wants them to stop... using it against a 10 year-old is just pure evil...

The Legal principal is clear, children who do not obey their parents, or any authority figure, the use of a cattle prod is a reasonable tool.

B. F. Skinner proved it's Scientific value.

A "D" on a report card? Get the cattle prod.

No noise, no marks, and it works best if you catch them by surprise in the shower.

What I've gone through as a child, is nothing compared to this. :x

This makes me feel really angry. This is vile and moreso because the child is being charged, not the Mother or the police officer (who in my opinion did more wrong).

I remember reading a post here a few weeks ago about people being alergic to water but that the reaction isn't visible in one type of alergy and is visible in another. I don't know if this was the case but if it was you can understand a kids refusal to take a shower, or it could have been some other reason. Calling the police because your kid won't take a shower is bad, I can't understand how a person would be justified in doing that, let alone saying to tazer the kid.

Poor parenting + calling police to handle a 10 year old with a "disorder" = FAIL. Parents who cannot handle their children should have to forgo their rights as parents. Not to mention a police officer who cannot handle a 10 year old should not be an officer (cmon, image of River Tam taking out Jayne in Serenity comes to mind).

I personally would blame the mother for thinking that there is a need to get the police involved in this situation, and the police officer for agreeing to take the child away, as though this were some offense worthy of incarceration. That being said, I don't see anything specifically wrong with tasering a 10-year-old child who could be a threat. Whether the child was a threat is debatable; what we do know is that the child had already kicked the officer in the groin.

policemen get away with so much. i don't know why society chooses to laud cops and put them on some kind of pedestal. it's even a special offense to assualt an "officer", or even to pretend to be one! every cop i've ever known or came in contact with in my life has been a rule crazy, authoritarian, prick that was basically an overgrown schoolyard bully with too much power. this is not to say that there aren't "good" decent cops that simply want to enforce the laws and make it better place to live, but i haven't met any. anytime you give someone that kind of power..it usually goes to their heads. I'm sure most of you have heard of Zombardo's Standford Prison Experiment. sorry to get of on a rant... and the mother, if she can be called that, what the hell? what kind of low life worthless trailer trash actually calls the police and tells them basically to taser if neccessary her 10 year old daughter seriously

actually i read that Skinner preferred positive reinforcement.

Also it doesn't suprise me that this happened in Arkansas.

Maybe the officer is lining himself for a job at the Judge Rotenborg Center.

What sort of person calls the police because their kid won't take a damn shower???! !! !! 8O

If I was that cop, I'd have arrested the mother for wasting police time. This story is a disgrace.

Some might call it an overreaction and extreme use of force, but I say: Future scatwoman in the making!

I'll admit the girl was acting like a little brat but she didn't need to be tased. What the hell is up with cops these days? No offense to all police officers but they seem like they want to find any reason to tase people.

Forget using a tazer gun. This would have been more appropriate: :P

I'd blame the mother for calling the cops 'cause the girl wouldn't take a shower... That's crazy.

I don't know how big or strong the girl was, but she DID kick the cop in the balls before he tasered her. That probably hurt more than getting tasered did.. I don't think it's okay to taser ten-year-olds, but I also don't think it's okay to kick cops in the balls..

I hope this girl can retain a lawyer through legal aid and get the charges dismissed due to a charter violation with respect to the tasering (unreasonable force and the cop acting outside of his duties). Then I hope she sues the cop and is placed in the custody of her father.I hope the mother is then the one forced to pay child support.
