Missouri Senate Passes Child Autism Coverage Bill

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. --

The Missouri Senate has given preliminary approval to a bill that would require insurance providers to pay for treatment for autistic children.

The measure would require insurance companies to pay up to $55,000 for behavioral treatment until an autistic child reaches the age of 21.

Such coverage isn't currently required, and the insurance industry says the measure would increase insurance costs. But supporters say treating autistic children can make dramatic changes in how they interact with others.

Gov. Jay Nixon and legislative leaders have said the issue will be a priority this session.

Also Wednesday, lawmakers added an amendment that would allow Missouri residents to buy insurance from out-of-state companies that do not have to offer the autism coverage.
