I just thought this was funny..

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/8508077.stm

An Arab country's ambassador to Dubai has had his marriage contract annulled after discovering the bride was cross-eyed and had facial hair.

The woman had worn an Islamic veil, known as the niqab, on the few occasions the couple had met.

The envoy, who has not been identified, told a Sharia court her mother had tricked him by showing him pictures of the bride's sister, Gulf News reported.

He only discovered the deception when he lifted the woman's veil to kiss her.

The court had annulled the marriage contract but rejected a $130,000 (£83,000) compensation claim for gifts he had bought his intended, the report said.

Especially given that she (or her family?) got to keep the $130,000 in gifts, it would be even funnier if she was faking it to get out of the marriage -- crossed her eye on purpose and glued on a beard or something. Would have only had to do it for the 5 seconds he had the veil lifted. :P

You know I wondered about that too.

I mean even if she was bearded, she could've at least shaved before facing her suitor.... :?

On the other hand, had freak shows not been outlawed she could've made enough in carnivals without "needing" a husband to support her.

HaHa! It appears that arranged marriages aren't always so benign.

But, aren't Muslim women expected to be homely, anyway?

If all were homely they would never have established the custom of arranged marriage in the first place.

That's not a very nice thing to say. What if you were born with that condition instead of AS? ^^;

And the UAE is a well developed country. Sure, Muslims do have personal law for marriage, divorce, inheritance, etc, but otherwise it's pretty much a westernised country with an absolute monarchy which surprisingly works just like any western democracy.

I'm still at awe whenever I think of my visit to that country.

It looks like she did not consider laser hair removal. It's not really expensive, and nobody (except the construction workers who come from India for short periods and live in their own separate camps) is poor in that country. Or maybe, as suggested, she just wanted to con the man for his money.

Hey freak shows use to pay better wages than your average jobs and disability checks.

The trouble with aspie freaks is they're not as easy to spot thus expected to live normal like the rest of the drones. So comparatively speaking the bearded lady lives a better life than me since she earns more than I could in a lifetime.... :(

Hirsutism is a common phenomenon among women, and upto 5-10% of women suffer from it. Most women tend to treat it with laser hair removal, those that can't afford it shave it all off. This woman did neither.

I've gone to circuses, and I've never seen a single bearded lady.

Might be because they no longer have the legal means to exploit themselves. If there was money in it then maybe you might get a chance. As you said, they'd most likely shave it off no matter how poor they were. But it would nevertheless be a rare phenomenon to see and may have its benefits especially if one weren't too keen on the arrangement of marriage.
