It's possible that this was an accident, and the family are afraid of being labled "killers".
That possibility also applies to the Kahui twins case (mentioned in the link). I've heard a scenario from a retired doctor discussing infant nutritional needs, and that under specific circumstances (malnutrition, biological, maybe genetic, etc.), minor knocks or falls can be much more harmful.

Given that the police are investigating, I would say it's probably likely that it wasn't an accident. It's possible - there've been cases of it before - but not all that likely, and we don't have enough details to judge.

That being said, the fact that parts of the family are closing is isn't surprising, whether it was an accident or not. If it was intentional, they of course don't want to admit that and possibly go to jail. If it wasn't, they're still facing pressure from the grandmother, who believes they are guilty. Even if she doesn't out right say it to them, it probably comes across pretty clearly anyway. They're going to band together then just to offer each other support in face of having a terrible tragedy turned worse with blame.
