I am not surprised that this man was able to amass that kind of money. You hear stories like this all of the time in the USA too. What is sad however are the family members who saw him as too crazy to be around suddenly wanting his fortune once they found out he has one.

I had an aunt like this. She was from my father's side (same as my Aspergers grandpa). She was wealthy but would wander around with the shopping cart in raggedy clothes making everyone think she was a bag lady. Eccentricity was a common trait on that side.
